Art and Design Education-Assessment and Accountability

The Department of Public Instruction does not currently have a state assessment in the arts but Wisconsin is participating in the development of a variety of assessments in the arts including:

  • The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) in the arts has been administered and scored for eighth-grade students. The NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card is available from the National Center for Educational Statistics at www.ed.gov/pubs/edpubs.html or http://nces.ed.gov/naep.

  • State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (SCASS) is a national initiative of 16 states to develop assessments in the arts. Information can be obtained from the Council of Chief State School Officers in Washington, DC at (202) 336-7046 or e-mail: frankp@ccsso.org.

  • Student Centered Learning in the Arts (SCLA) is an adaptation of Arts PROPEL by an action research group of Wisconsin art and music teachers. They have developed a model of instruction/assessment that yields enhanced achievement, intrinsic motivation, higher-order thinking, creativity, self-directed learning, and fewer discipline problems.
