Peshtigo Fire Anniversary
On the evening of October 8, 1871, the worst recorded forest fire in North American history raged through Northeastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, destroying millions of dollars worth of property and timberland, and taking between 1,200 and 2,400 lives. The great Midwestern city of Chicago also happened to endure a terrible fire that same fateful night, and for whatever reasons, the Chicago Fire became part of the national consciousness.

Leif Ericson was born in Iceland and raised in Greenland. Norse sagas written 300 years after his death describe his explorations, around 1000 A.D., of a land he called "Vinland." The location of Vinland remains unknown, but it is widely believed to be on the North American continent.

National Anthem Day
Celebrates the day in 1931 when Congress adopted the "Star-Spangled Banner" as our national anthem. Francis Scott Key wrote the song during the War of 1812. On Sept. 13, 1814, Key and a U.S. negotiator were detained aboard a British vessel during the attack on Fort McHenry. Seeing the American flag still flying over the fort the next morning inspired Key to pen the "Star-Spangled Banner."
