1. PRELIMINARY LSTA GRANT IDEAS FOR 2007

Preliminary Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant category ideas for 2007 are available on the LSTA website at http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/lstaprelim07.html. These ideas and additional proposals will be considered by the LSTA Advisory Committee at its meeting on April 11-12 at the Crowne Plaza, 4402 East Washington Avenue, Madison.

As a part of the LSTA Advisory Committee meeting, there will be a public hearing on Tuesday, April 11, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interested persons may attend the hearing and offer comments and suggestions on the LSTA program for 2007. Persons unable to attend the public hearing may submit written comments to Peg Branson by letter (P.O. Box 7841, Madison, WI 53707-7841), fax (608/266-2529), or email (peg.branson@dpi.state.wi.us). Testimony should arrive by April 10 for inclusion in the hearing.

The LSTA grant categories for 2007 will be announced in April. Grant applications will be due in September and projects will begin in January 2007. Contact Peg Branson, LSTA Program Coordinator, if you have questions or would like additional information on the LSTA program.

2. WEMA COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

The Wisconsin Educational Media Association (WEMA) and Brainstorm, a technology group, just completed a first-ever joint conference at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells that was attended by 1043 registrants and over 100 exhibitors, including mobile exhibits from Microsoft and Cisco.

At its annual membership meeting held Tuesday, March 7, 2006, the WEMA Board asked for endorsement of its decision to accept the report of the Restructuring Task Force's plan for reorganization of the association. The plan was the culmination of more than two years of discussion, deliberation and planning, and details the process to be followed over the next year and makes recommendations for structure and governance which will serve as the framework for the work of the transition committees. The membership agreed with the board's recommendation by a vote of 209 yes to 27 no.

The decision to reorganize WEMA represents the recognition that preparing students to become successful members of society is more than educational media, and that information and technology are a natural partnership. The proposed membership will reflect all individuals involved in the support, utilization and integration of media, information and technology in education to promote student achievement. Even though WEMA has already embraced media and technology, the proposal reflects that more opportunity exists to implement statewide initiatives and advocate for resources in support of student achievement by working together through one professional association.

3. NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK IS APRIL 2-8

The theme for National Library Week 2006 is "Change your world @ your library®." National Library Week (NLW) is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians, and library workers to their schools, campuses, and communities.

National Library Week 2006 marks the sixth year of The Campaign for America's Libraries, a multi-year public education campaign sponsored by the ALA and libraries across the country to speak loudly and clearly about the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century.

Sample NLW press releases, PSAs, etc. are available at http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/campaign/nlw/NLW.htm.

4. TEACHINGBOOKS OFFERS TWO NEW PROGRAMS

TeachingBooks, accessible through BadgerLink at www.badgerlink.net, has two new original author programs that may be of interest to teachers of reading, writing, and social studies/history classes.

The Kate DiCamillo program includes a four-minute movie from her studio and five extra movies of Kate reading from her books, an extensive written interview about her books and writing process, and links to relevant websites and book guides.

The Joseph Medicine Crow program includes a four-minute movie where he laughs about his childhood games and reflects on the two cultures in which he lives as a Crow Indian, an extensive written interview about his personal experiences, and links to relevant websites for teaching Crow and Native American studies.
