2. TEACHERS RATE MARCOPOLO NO. 1 ONLINE RESOURCE

Wisconsin teachers named MarcoPolo the top Website for providing free educational materials to use in their Classroom. In a recent survey conducted by Edutopia, a magazine published by the George Lucas Educational Foundation, teachers named MarcoPolo as a top resource for instructional materials.

MarcoPolo is a partnership among leading educational organizations and the Verizon foundation. MarcoPolo is a gateway to seven discipline-specific sites, with resources furnished by the
* John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts,
* National Council on Economic Education,
* National Endowment for the Humanities,
* National Council of Teachers of Mathematics,
* International Reading Association,
* National Council of Teachers of English,
* American Association for the Advancement of Science and
* National Geographic Society.

MarcoPolo is located at http://www.marcopolo-education.org. Many of these resources are also aligned to Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards at the Curriculum Resource Center located at http://www2.dpi.state.wi.us/crc.

More than 6,400 teachers from Wisconsin have participated in training to use MarcoPolo as a curriculum tool. We have many MarcoPolo lessons waiting to be aligned with Wisconsin's standards and entered into the Curriculum Resource Center database. Also we would like to provide professional development training for Wisconsin teachers, library media specialists and public librarians. Please contact Donna Steffan at donna.steffan@dpi.state.wi.us to arrange for these professional development opportunities.

3. NCLIS RECOGNIZES JOHN AND NETTIE MOONEY HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER

The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) has announced the state winners for the 2006 NCLIS Health Information Awards for Libraries. Wisconsin's winner is the John & Nettie Mooney Health Resource Center (HRC) of the Gundersen Lutheran Health System, serving La Crosse and 42 regional clinics extending into 19 counties in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa.

Funded by John and Nettie Mooney, the HRC library's restful design provides a welcoming, supportive environment with easy access to information resources, keeping patrons informed and involved in their own health care decisions. Books and audiovisuals (which can be viewed in a private room) are available for loan, health newsletters, magazines and newspapers are provided, and computers to research health topics or email family are offered. The HRC education room hosts health classes and support groups, such as smoking cessation, diabetes education and parenting. Librarians work with educators to ensure that appropriate materials are available.

As a consumer health library within a large integrated healthcare system, the HRC's primary function is providing authoritative, current, and understandable information to patients, families, and community members. Librarians perform customized searches while patrons wait, or mail information to the patron. The HRC Website provides access to the library catalog and nationally recognized information resources containing English, Spanish, and low-level literacy materials.

In 2005, HRC librarians served the community by exhibiting to 5,100 people at 12 corporate and community health fairs. To further encourage community partnerships and share knowledge, librarians delivered peer training on consumer health resources to local public librarians. Additionally, librarians created a recommended list of core health resources for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center of the 7 Rivers Region and have been invited to serve on their resource committee.

HRC librarians support and enhance patient education by collaborating with healthcare providers. Librarians created 25+ customized bibliographies of library and Internet health resources. Patrons can obtain these on the library website (http://www.gundluth.org/libraries); over 300 were downloaded in the first quarter of availability. The print versions are used by non-computer literate patrons, and by providers referring their patients to the library to obtain materials. By partnering to serve information needs of patients, librarians are physician/nurse extenders, allowing doctors and nurses more time to address patient's physical needs.

Congratulations to the John & Nettie Mooney Health Resource Center of the Gundersen Lutheran Health System!

Judges for Wisconsin were Margaret (Peg) Allen, Library Consultant; Lori Deering, LifeSpan Health Educator, Affinity Health System; John R. Meurer, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of General Pediatrics, Medical College of Wisconsin; and Zorba Paster, Dean Medical Center. The DLTCL greatly appreciates the assistance of these distinguished volunteer judges.

4. LIFELONG LIBRARIES

Lifelong Access Libraries is a multi-year, national initiative that aims to transform libraries into centers of lifelong learning and civic engagement for active older adults. It is a project of Americans for Libraries Council, made possible by a generous grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies.

A new website with information on serving active older adults is available at http://www.LifelongLibraries.org. The site is a feature of the national Lifelong Access Libraries Initiative, positioning libraries to meet baby boomers and other active adults with up-to-the-minute resources, referrals, meaningful life options, and more.

Among the features of the site:
-- An Innovations Inventory, capturing emerging practices in library programs and services for active older adults;
-- Links, resources, and training agendas to help libraries and other community-responsive institutions update services for the millions of baby boomers right now considering new options for creative work and meaningful retirement;
-- Reports such as "Designs for Change: Libraries and Productive Aging," capturing insights from last fall's ALC/IMLS Library Leaders Forum, including a call to action for libraries to lead the way to new approaches to aging.

Gloria Coles is the National Director of Lifelong Access Libraries.

5. Website of the Week
