1. NEW BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR LOAN FROM RLL

Library media specialists know how important their programs are to student achievement and the learning process, but getting this message through to administrators can be challenging. The Reference and Loan library has just purchased a book to help. "The Principal's Guide to a Powerful Library Media Program" by Marla W. McGhee and Barbara A. Jansen defines best practices, based on research, personal experiences and real-life examples. The principal's role in hiring, budgeting, professional development, and supervision is clearly outlined.

Librarians in all types of libraries wishing to promote their services and attract funding may want to borrow "Blueprint for Your Library Marketing Plan: A Guide to Help You Survive and Thrive" by Patricia H. Fisher and Marseille M. Pride. The book includes reproducible forms and worksheets, models from other libraries and resources for more information.

School library media specialists and librarians at special libraries may request these titles by sending an e-mail to rllill@dpi.state.wi.us. Public and academic libraries may request these titles through their local interlibrary loan network.

2. RECORDING OF 2006 PLA NATIONAL CONFERENCE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE FROM RLL

Each disc has an on-screen index of the sessions and handouts it contains. System requirements for the discs: Windows 98, 2000 XP or above; Internet Explorer 5.0 or above; windows Media Player 6.4 or above; Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 or above.

3. NATIONAL LIBRARY COURIER SYMPOSIUM

The Colorado State Library is sponsoring a national symposium on delivery services designed for those that manage delivery services on the regional or statewide basis. The symposium will be held September 14-15, 2006 in Denver, Colorado. Participants will hear about various models for providing courier services and their costs, national trends and innovative practices, and other topics. Participants will have a chance to talk with others providing courier services, be introduced to various vendor services, be introduced for best practices for contracting and/or providing services, and have a chance to contribute to an ongoing website and interstate communications. Interested participants can register at http://www.clicweb.org/couriersymposium/.

4. TEACHINGBOOKS IMPROVES ACCESS TO AUDIO CLIPS

BadgerLink vendor TeachingBooks provides 400 audios of authors reading their books. TeachingBooks is working with publishers to host the clips on their server in MP3 format to make them easier to use.

2. Type in (with quotes) "Books on Tape"
3. Check off the age range(s) that interest you

TeachingBooks is interested in any photos that you may take of children listening to audio books or watching video author programs. If you have photos, send them to john@TeachingBooks.net.

5. LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH PROMOTES THE "SMARTEST CARD" Promotional tools in Spanish and English are available online to promote "The Smartest Card. Get It. Use It. @ your library(r)" theme for Library Card Sign-up Month, which begins September 1. Observed the month of September since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when ALA and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all - and this year - the smartest card a student can own.

New this year are radio Public Service Announcements (PSAs) featuring actor-comedian George Lopez, as well as a summary of best practices from public libraries nationwide using the "Smartest Card" theme. The radio PSAs can be downloaded and shared with local media. Libraries also can download a print PSA featuring Lopez that can be customized with local contact information at no cost, courtesy of The Campaign for America's Libraries. Instructions on how to customize are posted online.

Other tools include "52 Ways to Use Your Library Card," a sample proclamation, press release, op-ed, letter-to-the-editor, PSA scripts and "Smartest Card" artwork. There also are links to "Smartest Card" promotional items available from ALA Graphics.

All materials are available at www.ala.org/librarycardsignup.
