1. DPI ANNOUNCES INTENT TO NEGOTIATE FOR RESOURCE SHARING CONTRACT
The Department of Public Instruction notified Auto-Graphics of its intent to negotiate the award of a contract for the Wisconsin Resource Sharing and Information Access project defined in RFP #PAF 0611 on Tuesday, August 15. 2006. The Department plans to negotiate for a hybrid union/virtual catalog containing Wisconsin library holdings and an interlibrary loan management system.
The RFP requested responses for Group A modules: union catalog, virtual catalog, and interlibrary loan system and Group B modules: cataloging and federated search portal. Four vendors responded to the RFP: Auto-Graphics, Inc., OCLC, SirsiDynix, and WebFeat. As a part of its final recommendations, the evaluation committee recommended making an award in Group A only.
Scores were assigned in three categories: Technical score (vendor's response) - 40%, evaluators' score -40%, and cost score - 20%. Auto-Graphics, Inc. received the most points for both the technical score and the evaluators' score.
Cost categories and calculations were applied as consistently as possible for all vendors. Five year costs used for evaluation purposes for Group A products stated in the RFP responses were as follows:
Auto-Graphics: $2,274,000 if the server is housed in California, $2,076,700 if the server is housed in Madison
OCLC: $23,427,497
SirsiDynix: $1,420,500
There will be a 5-10 day appeal process and the department will not be able to begin negotiations prior to that time.
Individuals wanting to view vendor responses, scoring and other specified information may request copies of such information under the public records law at $.10 per page from Sue Linton, DPI Finance Director, at 608-266-3320.

4. GEORGE LOPEZ SPOKESPERSON FOR LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
Actor-comedian and author George Lopez joins the American Library Association (ALA) and hundreds of libraries across the country this September promoting Library Card Sign-up Month. Lopez is the official spokesman for this national observance, which serves as a time to remind parents that the best back-to-school tool for their child is a library card.
"No parent can afford to overlook the great resources freely available in our nation's libraries," said ALA President Leslie Burger. "Libraries help level the playing field for people of all ages and backgrounds. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning."
Wisconsin residents check out almost 58 million items and visit their public libraries more than 33 million times each year. Print and radio PSAs featuring Lopez are available for free download at http://www.ala.org/librarycardsignup. The page also features tips and materials for reaching out to local elected officials.
5. WEBSITE OF THE WEEK
DOGS: Wolf, Myth, Hero & Friend -- http://www.nhm.org/exhibitions/dogs/ -- Today, dogs enhance the lives of millions in countless ways, but they are also some of humans' oldest friends. Ancient clues like cave paintings and burials reveal that dogs and people have lived together for thousands of years. But why have humans formed such close relationships with dogs, and not cows or chickens? This site examines the facts on dogs and explores what makes the human/dog relationship so unique.
