2. 2005 WISCONSIN PUBLIC LIBRARY STATISTICS AVAILABLE
The Division's Public Library Development Team annually collects statistics from all of Wisconsin's 387 public libraries. Excel files of the latest 2005 statistics are now available at http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/dm-lib-stat.html
The Excel files include over 125 data elements grouped by general categories. Most of the categories are further defined. For example "collection" information includes volumes owned, added, A-V titles,
periodicals, etc. The data are available in four separate Excel files:
- Statistics at the State and System Level
- Statistics at the County Level
- Statistics at the Public Library Level
- Statistics at the Public Library Level by System and County
The Website includes statistics back to 1996. If you have any questions on the statistical information in the above files, contact Al Zimmerman (608) 266-3939 or alan.zimmerman@dpi.state.wi.us.

4. NEW YORK TIMES LIBRARIAN AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
In this sixth year of its Librarian Awards program, the New York Times will honor 21 public librarians from across the country whose exemplary performance and outstanding community service have made their libraries friendlier and more accessible institutions. The New York Times Librarian Awards were created to support and recognize public librarians, who do so much to nurture a better-informed society.
Eligible nominees include any librarian with a Master's degree in library science who is currently working in a public library in the United States. Nominators are encouraged to nominate librarians who consistently demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism, knowledge and public service in the execution of their duties. Nominations will be accepted until September 15. The newspaper is also launching an Academic Librarian Awards program later this year, which will honor three librarians who are currently working in university libraries. Winners of both the public and the academic Librarian Awards will be announced in The Times in December and will each receive $2,500 and a commemorative plaque.
More information on the awards is available at: http://www.nytco.com/community/librarianawards06.html.
