1. GATES FOUNDATION RURAL LIBRARY SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) $85,950 as part of the foundation's Rural Library Sustainability Project. This project is intended to support small and rural libraries and librarians in implementing community-specific action plans to address the challenges of sustaining public access computing. The Rural Library Sustainability Project is a collaborative effort between WebJunction, state library agencies throughout the country, and rural and small library staff.

To help rural and small libraries develop their action plans, John DeBacher, Public Library Administration consultant for the DLTCL, will conduct a number of regional workshops focused on key issues of sustainability (e.g., hardware upgrades, funding). John is currently working with library systems to establish dates and locations for the all-day workshops, which are targeted at directors of libraries serving rural areas or with service populations under 25,000. The workshops will begin late this fall and continue through May 2007. Participants are eligible for six continuing education credits. Grant funds are available for travel, meals, lodging, and substitute wages. Also, three participants will be eligible to win an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the annual American Library Association conference in June 2007. For additional information contact John DeBacher (608/266-7270; john.debacher@dpi.state.wi.us) or Bob Bocher (608/266-2127; robert.bocher@dpi.state.wi.us) on the DLTCL staff.

2. LSTA MEETING AND PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED

Wisconsin's LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) Advisory Committee will meet in Madison on Wednesday and Thursday, November 29 and 30, at the Crowne Plaza, 4402 E. Washington Avenue, Madison, to discuss grant proposals and make award recommendations for LSTA projects to take place in 2007. The committee also will review the current five-year LSTA program - 2003-2007 - and begin developing a new five-year LSTA plan for 2008-2012. Both of these documents will be completed in 2007.

Persons interested in offering suggestions for the LSTA program for 2008-2012 are invited to attend a public hearing which will be held in conjunction with the LSTA Advisory Committee meeting. The hearing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 29. If you are unable to attend the public hearing, written comments may be submitted by letter, fax, or e-mail to Peg Branson, P.O.
