1. DLTCL PROGRAMS AT THE 2007 WAPL CONFERENCE
The following programs are sponsored or presented by staff from the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) at next week's Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries (WAPL) conference in Eau Claire. The theme for the conference is "Wisconsin Public Libraries: Raising Your Community's Net Worth." Wednesday, May 2
9:30 a.m.: Greener Pastures Workshop. This is the final workshop in a series funded by the Gates Foundation. It is focused on rural library sustainability of public access computing. The workshop is presented by John DeBacher and Bob Bocher. To register, contact Leah Langby at the Indianhead Federated Library System, langby@ifls.lib.wi.us, by 4 p.m. Friday, April 27.
Thursday, May 3
9:00 a.m.: Keynote Address, "Making it Count @ Your Library: The Strongest Messages, The Latest Facts, The Best Sources." Keith Curry Lance will highlight research that backs-up the messages, facts, and sources the can be used to tell the library story effectively (sponsored by DLTCL).
10:30 a.m.: "It's a Numbers Game." Keith Curry Lance and Al Zimmerman will demonstrate the use of statistics to describe and defend your library (sponsored by the Wisconsin Small Libraries Roundtable (WISLR); co-sponsored by DLTCL).
10:30 a.m.: "What's New Under the Dome: State and Federal Legislative Issues." Rick Grobschmidt, Jessica MacPhail, Paul Nelson will provide an update on current legislative issues (sponsored by DLTCL; co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Library Association's Library Development and Legislation
(LD&L) committee).
3:15 p.m.: "WISCAT Users Group." Mary Clark, Vicki Long, and Terry Wilcox will provide information and demonstrations related to the WISCAT project, including updating serial holdings, interlibrary loan, the Z39.50 gateway, and new features (sponsored by DLTCL).
Friday, May 4
9:00 a.m.: "Wiretapping the Internet: Coming Soon to Your Library's Internet Provider." Bob Bocher will review federal law enforcement's aggressive program to seek broadly expanded powers to wiretap the Internet. This presentation will also explore Net Neutrality and it impact on public libraries (sponsored by the Wisconsin Library Association's Media and Technology Section (MATS) and the Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT)).
2. WISCONSIN HUMANITIES COUNCIL OFFERS MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD TRAINING
The Wisconsin Humanities Council (WHC), with the help of the Verizon Foundation, is offering Wisconsin's teachers, librarians, and other literacy instructors an opportunity to receive the newly updated Motheread/Fatheread Story Exploring(r) curriculum at half the cost of normal tuition. Instruction will take place June 26, 2007 in Madison at the UW-Extension's Pyle Center.
A gift from the Verizon Foundation is enabling the WHC to offer $150 "Verizon Scholarships" to twenty instructors new to Motheread/Fatheread(r). Applicants who live or work in a Verizon local service area will be given priority for the scholarships. Tuition is just $50 for participants previously certified as Motheread/Fatheread(r) instructors. Registration deadline is May 15, 2007.
The Story Exploring(r) books reflect the findings of current research and federal guidelines for early childhood and elementary school reading instruction. Story Exploring(r) offers three levels using over 100 multicultural children's books.
