1. REMINDER LSTA INFORMATION SESSIONS
Friday, June 1, is the deadline for registering for the LSTA information sessions for those interested in applying for LSTA funds in 2008 for LSTA grant projects. The session on Wednesday, June 6 (10:00-11:30 a.m.), is a telephone conference call session and will cover grant applications in the areas of library technology, literacy, training, and projects for those with disabilities. The session on June 7 (10:00-11:30 a.m.) is a WisLine Web session for those interested in applying for LSTA funds for digitization projects to take place in 2008. Contact Peg Branson at 608/266-2413 or peg.branson@dpi.state.wi.us to register for either or both of the sessions. There is no charge for attending the sessions.
2. COMMON SCHOOL FUND AID PAYMENTS
The state's 425 school districts are sharing an estimated $29 million in school library aid for the purchase of library media center materials. The aid comes from earnings from the Common School Fund, the state's oldest trust fund.
"Income from the Common School Fund paid to school districts is a critical resource for school library media centers to provide print, multi-media, electronic and other library materials that open the world of information to students," said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster. "Research shows that school library programs that are adequately staffed by licensed professionals and funded so they can provide a broad range of resources lead to higher student achievement."
Library aid payments for the 2006-07 school year are at $23.08 per census student. The school census is the number of persons between the ages of 4 and 20 living in a school district as reported to the Department of Public Instruction. Statewide, the school census count was 1,256,267 for 2005-06. With the average price of a hardcover children's or young adult book now at $20.82, the aid provides for a little more than one book per child. Library aid payments from the Common School Fund were sent to districts on April 25 and purchases must be made by June 30 and used for expenditures cited in statute. Those items include books; newspapers; periodicals; electronic, audiovisual and other media resources; and Wisconsin history resources from the State Historical Society that are accessible and circulate from the
school library media center.
The complete news release is available on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction news release website at http://www.dpi.wi.gov/eis/prmenu.html.
3. DVDS ON INNOVATIVE LIBRARIES AND LIBRARY SAFETY AVAILABLE FOR LOAN FROM R&LL
Two new DVDs are now available for loan from the Reference and Loan Library. "Breaking the Mold: Innovative Libraries and Programs" is a new 25-minute program that examines some of the innovations public libraries are adapting to improve service and make themselves relevant in their customers' lives. It looks at libraries in the United States and in Hong Kong and Singapore to see achievements in areas such as technical services, library design and display, self-service operations, digital delivery of audio visual materials, and in special activity efforts including a community disaster preparedness clearinghouse and themes for a children's reading club. The DVD was produced by Library Video Network in 2007, and is closed-captioned. The Reference and Loan Library's call number is DVD V-192.
"Library Safety" is a 31-minute DVD with a guide in which a trooper from the West Virginia State Police presents security checklists and tips to help keep staff and patrons safe in the library. He discusses safety procedures, identification of gangs, weapons concealment, danger zones, and low and high-level threats. The program was produced by the West Virginia Library Commission in 2000 and was released on DVD in 2006. The Reference and Loan Library's call number is DVD V-193.
DVDs and videos may be requested from Reference and Loan through normal interlibrary loan channels, by calling R&LL's circulation/AV booking department at 888-542-5543 (in-state) or 608-224-6169, by fax at 608-224-6178, or by email at rllill@dpi.state.wi.us.
