1. CITIZENSHIP TOOLKITS AVAILABLE FROM U.S. OFFICE OF CITIZENSHIP
The Office of Citizenship, a division of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, is offering free Citizenship Toolkits to public libraries on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested libraries can order one (1) kit using the on-line order form at http://www.citizenshiptoolkit.gov. The kits will not be distributed through state library agencies. Requests are limited to one free toolkit per library, so branch libraries will need to request their own individual kits. Librarians can begin ordering the kits immediately.
The kits contains a range of useful materials related to U.S. citizenship and will be especially helpful to immigrant populations. The materials in the kit include print resources on immigration and civics, handbooks, multimedia items, and a guide on how to use the materials.
The kits are being made available through the efforts of the Task Force on New Americans, a federal partnership created to strengthen the efforts of federal, state, and local agencies in providing immigrants the information they need to embrace the common core of American civic culture, learn English, and to fully become Americans. For questions about the kits, contact Carlos Munoz, project manager, at carlos.munoz@dhs.gov.

3. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE SOIS TO IMPLEMENT PH.D. PROGRAM
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Information Studies (UWM SOIS) has announced it will be implementing a new Ph.D. in Information Studies in the 2008-09 academic year. It will be the University's 24th doctoral program and supports the research mission of the institution, providing avenues for faculty and students alike to contribute to three primary areas: information policy, information organization, and information retrieval. The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved the implementation of the program at its June 2007 meeting after a multi-year planning process involving faculty, administrators, and a series of internal and external reviews. Johannes Britz, SOIS Dean, sees this unique Ph.D. as the logical outgrowth of the school's instructional and research programs, and as a perfect blending of the university's research mission and the school's information focus, international scope, and interdisciplinary mindset.
Under the guidance of the recently-appointed Ph.D. Program Director, Professor Dietmar Wolfram, the final stages of planning and implementation will take place during the next year, with the first class scheduled for the fall of 2008. For more information during this last stage of development, please consult the School website at http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/SOIS/index.htm, or contact Dr. Wolfram directly at dwolfram@uwm.edu.
4. WLA LITERARY AWARDS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED 2007 LITERARY AWARDS
The Literary Awards Committee of the Wisconsin Library Association has chosen New Auburn author Michael Perry's "Truck: A Love Story" as the Banta Award winner for 2007. The award is the highest literary achievement by a Wisconsin author for a work written in 2006. On the surface, Perry's tale of restoring his 1951 pickup truck is both hilarious and heartfelt as we encounter the quirky yet endearing folks of New Auburn, Wisconsin. With wry, self-deprecating humor and rich use of metaphor, Perry lovingly portrays the people and places of his daily life, paying homage to small town America and to love found unexpectedly and all that it brings. The Banta Award is made possible by the Banta Corporation Foundation through a grant to the WLA Foundation.
Also chosen for their body of work were three authors designated as Notable Wisconsin Authors: Jerold Apps, Russel B. Nye, and George Vukelich.
The Literary Awards committee also selected ten books by Wisconsin authors for Outstanding Achievement. These titles, all published in 2006, are:
Sean B. Carroll (Madison), "The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution."
Maggie Dietz (Green Bay), "Perennial Fall."
David Feige (Madison), "Indefensible: One Lawyer's Journey into the Inferno of American Justice)."
Jane Hamilton (Rochester), "When Madeline was Young (a novel)."
David Maraniss (Madison), "Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero."
Patricia B. McConnell (Madison), "For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend."
John Nichols (Madison), "The Genius of Impeachment: The Founder's Cure for Royalism."
Sam Savage (Madison), "Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife."
