1. VOLUNTEER LIBRARIES SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAMS

The Dominican University near Chicago has received a National Leadership Grant for research to study the effects of public library summer reading programs on student achievement. The focus of the study will be on third grade students, but will be conducted within the context of the library's regular summer library program. The university is requesting participation by interested libraries around the country. This is an opportunity for interested public librarians to participate in a national study on the importance of summer library programs.

The requirements for participants are that the library:
- Provide a variety of programs and experiences for elementary school age children during the summer.
- Provide a minimum of 6 weeks of active programming during the summer.
- Allow participants to "report" on books through the entire summer.
- Have a history of or willingness for collaboration with area elementary schools.
- Have a willingness to collaborate with a research team to gather information from young people who participate in the study with their parent's permission.

If selected to participate in the study, the requirements would include:
- Work in partnership with the local school district to promote the summer library program.
- Promote the summer library program to third graders during the spring of 2008.
- Present summer library reading program with at least six weeks of active programming.
- Provide data regarding summer library reading program implementation.
- With the consent of study participants, monitor program participation through use of a log for children going into fourth grade.
- Have public library staff involved with summer library reading program planning and implementation complete surveys related to this study.

2. BEST SMALL LIBRARY IN AMERICA AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT

Library Journal's annual award for the Best Small Library in America, cosponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was founded to encourage and showcase the exemplary work of these libraries. Now in its fourth year, the award honors the public library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service to populations of 25,000 or less. The winning library will receive a $15,000 cash award; a feature story in the February 1, 2008, Library Journal; membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the Public Library Association Biannual Conference in 2008, and a gala reception at the conference. 3. THIRD ANNUAL WISCONSIN COLLABORATIVE ONLINE NETWORK (WCON) SYMPOSIUM

The Wisconsin Collaborative Online Network (WCON), in partnership with Marian College School of Education, will be hosting a two-day statewide Online Learning Symposium at Marian College in Fond du Lac on October 15 and 16, 2007. The symposium begins at noon on Monday, October 15 and concludes Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Individuals involved with online learning or exploring online learning for their educational setting, schools interested in learning more about online learning, superintendents, principals, guidance counselors, classroom teachers, school board members, and many others interested in online learning in Wisconsin are invited to participate and attend.

The October 15th keynote speaker is Todd Hitchcock, Vice President, Global Services, Florida Virtual School. On October 16th, the keynote speaker is Marc Prensky, international speaker and author of Digital Game-Based Learning and Don't Bother Me Mom - I'm Learning.

Registration Fees (Registration Deadline: October 1, 2007 - Registration is limited to 125 participants): $150 per person (includes lunch, breaks, and handouts for two days) and $100 per person (includes lunch, breaks, and handouts for one day).

First 25 paid registrants will receive a FREE copy of Marc Prensky's book, "Don't Bother me, Mom, I'm Learning!"
