1. WEBJUNCTION COURSES FREE FOR MOST PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF

From now until December 15, 2007, most Wisconsin public library staff members are eligible to take WebJunction courses free of charge. The Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) will pay for these courses using funds available as part of the Rural Library Sustainability Grant, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. To qualify for the free courses, your library must serve a municipal population under 25,000 or serve an area classified as rural for census purposes (over 90% of the state's public libraries qualify). Course registration and other pertinent information is available at http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/wjcoursereg.html. NOTE: You will see in this information that you must first contact your library system staff to get the required course registration code.

Over 200 courses are available through the WebJunction course listing at http://webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=442. Most courses generally focus on technology, but within this category there is a wide variation. For example, there are courses on increasing your presentation skills and courses with a more technical focus, like Oracle relational database management. Many courses may be eligible toward recertification requirements for public library directors.

Because of restrictions on the grant funding, all courses must be completed by December 15, 2007. The DLTCL strongly encourages staff in eligible libraries to take advantage of this opportunity.

If you have any questions, contact Bob Bocher (608-266-2127, robert.bocher@dpi.state.wi.us) or John DeBacher (608-266-7270, john.debacher@dpi.state.wi.us) on the division's Public Library Development Team.

Kathryn (Kathy) Kostelnik, Library Media Specialist at Menomonee Falls High School, is the recipient of the Wisconsin Special Services Teacher of the Year award, presented by State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster at the State of Education Address and awards program held September 20 at the State Capitol. Kathy is one of four teachers selected to receive a Teacher of the Year award. Superintendent Burmaster announced additional support for the Wisconsin Teacher of the Year program from the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation which presented $3,000 checks to Wisconsin's 2007-08 Teachers of the Year.

Additional information about the Teacher of the Year awards, as well as Superintendent Burmaster's State of Education Address, can be found on the Department of Public Instruction's news release website at http://dpi.wi.gov/eis/prmenu.html.

3. IMLS CALLS FOR LAURA BUSH 21ST CENTURY LIBRARIAN GRANT APPLICATIONS

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) invites libraries, archives, and library agencies, associations, and consortia to apply for the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant program.

The program supports efforts to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians, as well as the faculty who will prepare them for careers in library science. It also supports grants for research related to library education and staffing needs; curriculum development; early career development programs for tenure-track library and information science faculty; and continuing education and training for current librarians and their staff. Guidelines are available on the IMLS Web site at http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/pdf/L21_2008.pdf. The application deadline is December 17, 2007.

"More than ever, the field of librarianship is attracting individuals who are interested in leading edge technology, creativity in educational programming, and a life of public service," said Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Ph.D., Director of IMLS. "This program allows the next generation of librarians to fully engage in the future while holding onto the field's time-honored values."

Applications, guidelines, and examples of successful proposals can be found on the agency's Web site at http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/21centuryLibrarian.shtm. All applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov. Instructions for completing and submitting applications through Grants.gov are in the guidelines and on the IMLS Web site. For more information contact IMLS Senior Program Officer Stephanie Clark at sclark@imls.gov or Program Specialist Karmen Bisher at kbisher@imls.gov.
