1. EDUCATION TO GO COURSES FREE FOR MOST PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF

Two weeks ago the division announced the availability of free courses provided via WebJunction (http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/wjcoursereg.html). The DLTCL is working to extend this offer to enable library staff to take Education to Go (ed2go) courses coordinated through the UW-Madison's School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS). The division will pay for these courses using funds available as part of the Rural Library Sustainability Program, which is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. To qualify for the free courses, your library must serve a municipal population under 25,000.

NOTE: Unlike WebJunction courses, where you can register at any time, the ed2go courses have set registration deadlines of October 17, November 14, and December 12. A description of the courses is at http://www.ed2go.com/uwslis/. Information on how to register for a course will be posted out to the WISPUBLIB email list early next week. This will give staff sufficient time to register, if desired, before the first (October 17) course deadline.

The division strongly encourages staff in eligible libraries to take advantage of this opportunity. If you have any questions, contact Bob Bocher (608-266-2127, robert.bocher@dpi.state.wi.us) or John DeBacher (608-266-7270, john.debacher@dpi.state.wi.us) on the division's Public Library Development Team.

2. ONLINE WORKSHOPS FOR RURAL LIBRARIES AND TRAINERS

WebJunction offers two free online webinars this month. On Wednesday, October 17, "The Accidental Library Trainer" covers topics of interest to those librarians who find themselves providing technology training with little or no previous experience or instruction. Stephanie Gerding, author of "The Accidental Technology Trainer: A Guide for Libraries," will address the most common concerns of newly minted technology trainers, recommend great tools and techniques, and share helpful advice from her many years coordinating and providing training for libraries of all types around the country. The program will run from 1 to 2 p.m. Instructions and further information is available from WebJunction at http://www.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=18001.

On Thursday, October 25 from 1 to 2 p.m., "Bringing people together at the library: Rural Libraries as Place" will be the next "In Focus" Webinar with guest presenter Cindi Hickey, Continuing Education Librarian and WebJunction Coordinator for the State Library of Kansas. This session's topic will cover the evolving role of the physical library space, particularly in light of changing technology, highlighting innovative and interesting rural library examples. Instructions to connect to the Webinar and additional information is available at http://www.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=13377.

4. AD COUNCIL AND LIBRARY OF CONGRESS LAUNCH NEW LIFELONG LITERACY CAMPAIGN

The Advertising Council and the Library of Congress has announced the launch of a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) developed to inspire young people to "explore new worlds" through reading and to promote literacy in all types of learning, including books, periodicals and cartoons.

The new PSAs, created pro bono by The Geppetto Group, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and the Brigham Young University (BYU) Ad Lab, are based on classical fiction books "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," as well as stories of King Arthur and the Round Table. The Geppetto Group produced "Oz," the original spot, and created the campaign tagline "Explore New Worlds," which encouraged the other two volunteer agencies to create inspirational endings from other classic works of fiction. The PSAs aim to inspire children in grades 4 to 6 to get more enjoyment out of reading and thereby inspire them to become lifelong learners.

The PSAs direct young readers to visit http://www.Literacy.gov, where they can connect to "The Storybook Adventure," a dynamic new online activity that takes them on a series of expeditions through fantasy realms, each inspired by a classic work of children's fiction. In each realm players answer questions about the story and get the chance to collect treasures from the stories as the game unfolds. Links to scanned pages from rare books of the library's collection are included in the game so kids can read the original text to find the answers to the questions. At the end of their adventure, they use the Collage Maker to create an e-card with the treasures they collected. "The Storybook Adventure" journeys bring reading to life in an educational way that is stimulating for young people.

According to the National Institute for Literacy, success in school, and life, starts with literacy. When young people become good readers in the early grades, they are more likely to become better learners throughout their school years and beyond. While parental involvement is critical, it ultimately comes down to inspiring the individual not only to read books, but to also find their own passion about reading in all forms.

"Young people who read throughout their lives are not only more knowledgeable, but they are also better citizens and more engaged in the world around them," said Dr. James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress. "The Library of Congress promotes lifelong literacy because reading is the cornerstone of any nation's global competitiveness, cultural health and collective wisdom."

The new PSAs were recently distributed nationwide and can be viewed on the Ad Council's Web site at http://www.AdCouncil.org.
