1. LSTA APPLICATION FORMS
The LSTA website (http://www.dpi.wi.gov/pld/lsta.html) has links to instructions and Word document templates for LSTA draft creation. Portions of the draft copy can be copied and pasted into the online grant forms found at (http://www3.dpi.wi.gov/FormFinder/). The LSTA grant application form (PI-2440-A) is live. Grant applications are due by September 12, 2008. REMINDER: Please remember to route your forms using the Internet Explorer browser.
2. BADGERLINK INTRODUCES EXCITING NEW FUNCTIONALITY
Reference and Loan Library staff plan to unveil two new features of the BadgerLink website beginning August 25, 2008. Users will now be able to search multiple BadgerLink databases simultaneously! The authentication process has been redesigned using a user-centered approach. Authentication is now more streamlined and intuitive.
Federated searching:
Federated searching will allow BadgerLink users to search multiple databases at one time by entering search terms in a single search box on the newly designed BadgerLink home page. Users will be able to search EBSCO, ProQuest, and LitFinder databases simultaneously in this way. The single list of search results will be presented by vendor and interface. Results with full text are marked with an F icon. Once a search result is selected, users will be taken to the vendor native interface to view the citation or article.
Those users that want to select a single vendor to be searched can still click on the vendor icon or the vendor link on the BadgerLink home page as they do now. Those users who want to select a specific subset of databases to be searched can use the Advanced Search feature to select the specific databases to be accesses through the federated search methodology.
Authentication:
The process of authenticating users for BadgerLink access has also been improved. The new process allows for a single point of authentication to access all BadgerLink resources. Currently, Reference and Loan Library staff works with each vendor separately to provide authentication. Staff will continue to maintain access points by IP address and library card access. When it is not possible to authenticate users by either process, library ID and Passwords will be made available on an individual basis when Wisconsin residence can be confirmed. The new system will provide a more streamlined process of authentication and will improve the consistency of users' experience. If users cannot be authenticated automatically using an IP address, they will be prompted to select their local library and enter their library card.
3. IMLS CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS STATEWIDE PLANNING GRANTS
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) invites proposals for the 2009 Connecting to Collections Statewide Planning Grants. Applications for these collaborative grants should address the recommendations published in the Heritage Health Index (HHI), which found that many collections held in the public trust by libraries, museums, and archives are at risk. This landmark study, conducted by Heritage Preservation in partnership with IMLS, offered four recommendations to collecting institutions:
* provide safe conditions for collections;
* develop an emergency plan;
* assign responsibility for collections care; and
* marshal public and private support for, and raise public awareness of, collections care.
Statewide Planning Grants foster effective partnerships among organizations that have a strong commitment to the collections stewardship goals of a given state, commonwealth, or territory, and fund ongoing or new collaborations. Projects must demonstrate how the participating institutions (representing libraries, museums, archives, and other relevant statewide organizations) will work together in a planning process that moves the state closer to achieving the recommendations of the HHI through an appropriate and achievable plan for action. In 2008, IMLS awarded these grants to 19 states (see http://www.imls.gov/news/2008/012308_list.shtm) and will continue to make one grant to each eligible state or territory.
Application guidelines for the 2009 planning grants are available in PDF format (623KB). The application deadline is October 16, 2008.
4. CELEBRATE BOOKS WITH BITE @ YOUR LIBRARY(r) DURING TEEN READ WEEK 2008
Teen Read Week 2008 will be held October 12-18, and the theme is Books with Bite @ your library! Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association. Teen Read Week started in 1998, making this the 11th celebration of Teen Read Week.
Why is it important to celebrate? Teens have many options for entertainment, so it's important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it's free, fun, and can be done anywhere. Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce.
More than 4,800 school and public libraries registered to participate in Teen Read Week last year. (http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/teenreading/trw/trw2008/index.cfm)
