1. ALA LIBRARY FUNDING AND TECHNOLOGY SURVEY

In approximately two weeks many public libraries nationwide, including libraries in Wisconsin, will receive the 2008-2009 survey on funding and technology. This is the annual survey done by the American Library Association (ALA) and Florida State University. If you are on the targeted list to complete the survey you will receive a letter from Keith Fiels, ALA Executive Director. The actual survey can be completed online, and the DLTCL strongly encourages you to do so. Results of last year's survey (2007-2008) will also be released in early September and will be available at http://www.ii.fsu.edu/plinternet. ALA and others use these surveys to advocate for library technology funding from a variety of sources including the E-rate, LSTA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Nancy Ashmore, Director of the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library, and Bob Bocher, DLTCL Technology Consultant, serve on the ALA Survey Advisory Committee. See the above referenced Website for additional information.

Federated Searching: A basic introduction to this feature in BadgerLink http://www.badgerlink.net/NewBadgerLink.ppt.

BadgerLink is a project of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning. Its goal is to provide access to quality online information resources for Wisconsin residents in cooperation with the state's public, school, academic, and special libraries and Internet Service Providers.

3. LIBRARY ACCESSIBILITY TOOLKIT AVAILABLE

A new "Library Accessibility" toolkit is available through the American Library Association to help all librarians confidently assist patrons with disabilities. A team of volunteers in conjunction with the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) developed the kit, "Library Accessibility-What You Need to Know," which provides critical information and tips for librarians and staff in all types of libraries.

The kit was edited by Monique DeLatte. It has 15 concise documents outlining the challenges faced by disabled patrons and offers methods for delivering one-on-one library services to these groups. The toolkit content was compiled by a committee of ASCLA members in partnership with experts in the field of library access, library science students at Louisiana State University, and patrons with disabilities and their families. Topics addressed in the toolkit include but are not limited to: patrons who have cognitive, mental or emotional illnesses; patrons with learning and/or developmental disabilities; patrons with service animals; patrons needing assistive technologies, and patrons with physical disabilities.

The kit can be downloaded free through the ASCLA web site at http://www.ala.org/ala/ascla/asclaprotools/accessibilitytipsheets/.

4. "LIBRARIES AND AUTISM: WE'RE CONNECTED" PROJECT

The Scotch Plains Public Library (NJ) and the Fanwood Memorial Library (NJ), together with their partners, produced a customer service training video primarily for library staff to help them serve individuals with autism and their families more effectively. The video focuses on what librarians need to know about autism and will empower them with specific techniques to offer more inclusive service to this growing and underserved population. Librarians are encouraged to explore this site, http://thejointlibrary.org/autism/index.htm, and make free use of the support resources. To receive a free "Libraries and Autism: We're Connected" decal, contact autism@thejointlibrary.org.

5. CARNEGIE CORPORATION OF NEW YORK/NEW YORK TIMES "I LOVE MY LIBRARIAN" AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT

Carnegie Corporation of New York has awarded the American Library Association (ALA) the sum of $489,000 to support the new Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times "I Love My Librarian" Award.

Administered by the ALA's Public Information Office and Campaign for America's Libraries, the award will launch this year and will continue annually through 2013. The award encourages library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college, and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community.

Nominations for public librarians run from August 15 through October 1. Nominations for school and academic librarians begin September 2 and continue through October 15.

"In our democratic society, the library stands for hope, for learning, for progress, for literacy, for self-improvement and for civic engagement. The library is a symbol of opportunity, citizenship, equality, freedom of speech and freedom of thought, and hence, is a symbol for democracy itself," said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York.

"We're thrilled to be working with the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the American Library Association to honor librarians who play such a vital role in our communities," said Scott Heekin-Canedy, president of The New York Times. "What began as a local Times initiative in New York City seven years ago has grown to a national awards program and now we are proud to be co-presenting the award with the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the ALA."

Up to 10 librarians in public, school, and academic libraries will be selected each year and each will be honored at a ceremony and reception in New York at The Times Center, hosted by The New York Times. Each winner also will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque, and a $500 travel stipend to attend the awards reception. In addition, a plaque will be given to each award winner's library.

Nominees will be judged by a selection committee based on quality of service to library users, demonstrated knowledge of the library and its resources and commitment shown in helping library users.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master's degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master's degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.
