2. WISCONSIN RECEIVES INTEL® FOUNDATION GRANT FOR 2009

For the second year in a row, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has received an Intel® Foundation grant to build capacity in states to implement their programs in conjunction with the Intel® Teach Program national training agency Learning Point Associates (LPA). The grant will be administered by the Instructional Media and Technology (IMT) team.

The $43,500 award will assist DPI in building capacity for schools in the state to deliver one or both of the Intel® Teach Program courses, Essentials 10 and/or Thinking with Technology, by providing local training for educators across the state to deliver the Intel® Teach Program courses.

The training in Wisconsin will be conducted by Wisconsin educators in conjunction with the Intel® Teach Program national training agency Learning Point Associates (LPA). The Intel® Teach Program engages both teachers and students in the development of 21st century skills and the integration of technology for teaching and learning. Teachers and students collaborate, analyze the quality of information, problem-solve, and communicate using online resources and technology tools.

For additional information on the program or courses, contact Stuart Ciske, technology consultant on the IMT team, at (608) 267-9289 or stuart.ciske@dpiwi.gov).

3. "WISCONSIN CONNECTS" CLASSROOMS FROM THROUGHOUT THE WORLD

Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton has announced the "Wisconsin Connects" project which will allow students in classrooms across the state to connect with other classrooms all over the world. The project was announced at the Wisconsin Educational Media Technology Association (WEMTA) annual conference and is a partnership between the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and ePals, a global community of collaborative learners, teachers, and academic experts in over 200 countries and territories.

"'Wisconsin Connects' gives students access to high-tech tools that will provide entry to other cultures, build relationships that strengthen America's stature in the world, improve global understanding, and position Wisconsin students to develop their global competencies at a young age," said Lieutenant Governor Lawton. "Participating students will improve their communication and internet technology skills and become better prepared to compete in a 21st century global economy."

WEMTA will hold a web meeting with Victoria McEachern of ePals on the "Wisconsin Connects" initiative on Wednesday, April 8, from 7:00- 8:00 p.m. CDT. Reserve a seat for the web meeting soon at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/735097674 as space is limited.

4. ART MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES DONATE BOOKS TO DISTRIBUTION EFFORT

The Distribution to Underserved Communities Library Program (DUC) is a nationwide effort that distributes brand-new books on contemporary art to rural and inner-city libraries, public schools, and alternative reading centers completely free of charge. These books are donated from some of the foremost art museums and galleries across the country.

If you are a public institution in a rural, inner-city, or underserved community, you are eligible to receive these free materials.

You may learn more about the program, browse the selection of titles, and place an order for books on our website at http://www.ducprogram.org.

Institutions are encouraged to place an order from the remaining 2008-09 catalogue stock. The DUC will be launching the 2009-10 catalogue of books in June--by placing an order now, your library will be added to the email list and will receive an announcement once the new books arrive (at which time you may place a new order).

All books are shipped completely free of charge!

If you have questions about the program or the ordering process, feel free to contact the DUC program at info@ducprogram.org or (212) 255-2919.
