1. TIPS FOR FIRST TIME LSTA SPECIAL NEEDS GRANT WRITERS

Public Library Development Team staff have summarized information for librarians who are writing their first LSTA application for a Special Needs project. These tips are intended to help writers maximize their efforts and to guide them toward a potentially successful project. The tips are available on the web page at http://www.dpi.wi.gov/pld/lstagrant-tips.html. Grant writers are also encouraged to request copies of past successful applications for projects that are related to their concept.

2. DPI-CONNECTED IS NOW AVAILABLE FROM STATE SUPERINTENDENT TONY EVERS

An electronic newsletter called DPI-ConnectEd is now available from State Superintendent Tony Evers. 3. OPPORTUNITY FOR LIBRARIES TO SUPPORT HIGHER EDUCATION DAY in WISCONSIN

The state's constitutional officers, higher education institutions, and educational and financial organizations have joined together to declare the 4th Annual Higher Education Day (HED). The day was created to:
Raise awareness among students and adults that higher education in Wisconsin is accessible;
Inspire students of all ages to reach for post-secondary education as a goal; and
Provide information about saving for college, financial assistance and other resources.

The 2008 HED included statewide contests for school age children in grades 1-10 for which libraries could help promote and raise awareness. The goal of the contests is to get all students to think about how higher education might make their lives better. 2009 contests and materials are yet to be finalized, but will likely be similar to 2008 which included:

Coloring Contest - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Graders
Essay Contest - 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders
Video Contest - 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Graders

For more information visit the HED website at: http://highereducationday.wi.gov, or contact Megan Perkins, Office of the State Treasurer, at 608-264-7886 or megan.perkins@wisconsin.gov.

A "Save the Date" flyer is available at http://highereducationday.wi.gov/docview.asp?docid=16875&locid=157.

4. MEDAL OF FREEDOM WINNER IN BADGERLINK

Chief Joseph Medicine Crow, the 95-year-old author, historian, and storyteller, is to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom on August 12th from President Obama. 5. SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH

Held in September, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time to remind parents and children that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

Library Card Sign-up Month was launched in 1987. Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that. Free tools to help libraries promote Library Card Sign-up Month are available at http://www.ala.org/librarycardsignup.

6. BARBARA BUSH FOUNDATION FOR FAMILY LITERACY NATIONAL GRANT PROGRAM

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy's National Grant Program's goal is to develop and expand family literacy efforts, and to support the development of literacy programs that build families of readers. The program provides grants for projects that support the development of literacy skills for adult primary care givers and their children.

Begun in 1990, the Foundation's competitive National Grant Program supports private, nonprofit organizations and public agencies - including libraries, correctional institutions, universities, housing projects, and public schools - in order to create, implement or expand programs that support the development of literacy skills. A total of approximately $650,000 is awarded each year; no grant exceeds $65,000.

Family Literacy programs funded through the Foundation's National Grant Program must include all of the following components:
-- Reading instruction for parents or primary care-givers
-- Literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children
-- Intergenerational activities in which the parents/primary caregivers and children read and learn together.

Programs also may include additional components such as parent support groups, parent involvement, home visits, community site visits, job training, and more.

The application deadline is September 14, 2009. The grant program details and the application guidelines and form are available on the Foundation's website: http://www.barbarabushfoundation.com.
