STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Grant
The 2007-09 Wisconsin biennial budget contains a provision for the Department of Public Instruction to provide grants to school districts for innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs targeted to under-represented students. A total of $61,500 is available annually with a maximum of $5,000 per application (school districts may submit one or more applications). Grants shall be for the period of July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009.
Purpose
Under s. 115.28 (46), Stats., the Department of Public Instruction awards grants to school districts to:
- develop innovative instructional programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;
- support pupils who are typically underrepresented in these subjects; and
- increase the academic achievement of pupils in those subjects.
Definitions
PI 31.02 Definitions. In this chapter:
- "Academic achievement" includes the achievement of pupils in STEM courses, careers, or technical applications.
- "Department" means the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
- "Pupils who are typically under-represented in STEM" means pupils who are female, pupils of color, pupils who are English language learners, pupils with disabilities, and pupils who are economically disadvantaged.
- "School District" has the meaning described in s. 115.01 (3), Stats.
- "STEM" means science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- "STEM program grant" means the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program established under s. 115.28 (46), Stats.

Fourteen grants totaling $64,804 will support innovative science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs targeted to students who are under-represented in those fields.
