The USDA's Food and Nutrition Service is charged with administering the Food Distribution Program. Through the Food
Distribution Program, USDA purchases foods through direct appropriations from Congress, and
under surplus-removal and price-support activities. The foods are distributed to State
agencies for use by eligible local outlets, including schools. Schools participating in the
National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program may receive USDA commodity
meats, vegetables, fruits, grains, and dairy products. For more information about the Food
Distribution Program, contact: Laura Sime, (608)
267-9119, or Lynne Slack, (608) 266-2596 or Dino Ante, (608) 266-3615.
