School Breakfast Program Bright Ideas

Breakfast in the classroom. Teachers are very involved.

Jerri and Mary at Longfellow Middle School in LaCrosse

Breakfast-In-A-Bag. Teachers like it and support it. Grades 6 through 8.

Kathy at Arcadia High School

The district took one minute off of each class and added it to the breakfast period before school! Our high school participation went up.

Rene at D.C. Everest High School

Open during all A.M. commons hours. Closed only between passings to classes. Hot and cold available. A couple of toasters available. Cappuccino and hot chocolate are big sellers!

Version of an Egg McMuffin (English Muffin or Baking Powder Biscuit, Turkey Ham, Egg Patty, and Slice of Cheese - Assemble and wrap in foil. Heat.)
Long Johns with peanut butter frosting.

Monica in Wauzeka-Steuben School District

We serve our breakfast within the academic school day.
Elementary Pre-K through Grade 4: 8-8:30 AM
Middle School Grades 5 through 8: 8:45 AM
High School Grades 9-12: 9:15 AM
Breakfast Pizza - Use pourable crust from USDA recipes, cheese sauce with peppers, scrambled eggs, diced ham, and shredded cheese. Brown and cut.

C. Michele at Central High School in LaCrosse

Scrambled Egg Bake - Uses commodity eggs and shredded cheese, plus milk, white pepper and shredded hash browns.

Pepin Area Schools

Breakfast in a bag:
Mondays and Fridays: Bagel with cream cheese and jelly
Tuesdays and Thursdays: Yogurt and granola bar
Wednesdays: Cinnamon rolls
Everyday: commodity applesauce cups and juice

Sherri at McFarland Middle/High School

I sent a short letter out to the parents of the free and reduced students as a reminder that their children are eligible for a breakfast, as well as, a lunch daily. This letter resulted in an increase in reimbursable breakfast at both our middle school and high school.

Grab and Go. Breakfast on Stage (Kids with breakfast watch cartoon tape.)
Super Prize Friday (Put stickers on bottom of breakfast bags to win prizes.)

Phyllis at Prairie View in De Soto

They love the Lucky Tray Game, Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and Muffins for Mother's breakfast. Invite parents and grandparents for breakfast. Would like to do a Dairy and Donuts for Dad Breakfast. Maybe this year!

Jennifer at Viroqua Area Schools

We serve a bag breakfast to High School students during a study break at 9:25 A.M. each morning.

Katie at West Salem Schools

We extended our breakfast program through summer school. We do breakfast in a bag with a prize during their ten minute break.

Edible spoons with yogurt. Counts for one grain/bread and one meat/meat alternate.
Sometimes we run a special i.e. Buy a breakfast and get a coupon for a free milk and cookie! The kids love it.

The DPI School Nutrition Team thanks all those who stopped by our booth and shared ideas with us. As we support each other in serving this very important meal, please continue to share your success stories with us. Together we can make a difference!
