Community Education Tool Kit-Citizen Involvement


GOAL

Mechanisms that provide for continued cross aged citizen input into program planning and development. This includes, but is not exclusive to the use of a representatives advisory council.

Objective: To have established a Board of Education policy which specifies accountability for citizen involvement in community education.

Measurement Criteria:

  1. School Board policy emphasizing broad citizen involvement

Objective: To have an ongoing community council representative of the total community served.

Measurement Criteria:

  1. Minutes of council meetings.
  2. Evidence of reactive ways to involve multiple groups in the school-community decision making process.
  3. A community council or other means to ensure broad representation of the community

Objective: To establish a plan for two-way communication between agencies and community residents.

Measurement Criteria:

  1. Evidence of action plans which details communications and results reflecting the identification of community needs and resources.
  2. Frequency of contact in which community education acts in a broker or clearinghouse function for other services.
  3. Community council role as a central planner.  

Objective: To develop mechanisms for involving the community in dealing with issues, concerns, and problems as they are identified.

Measurement Criteria:

  1. Subcommittees, task groups, and other organizational methods of addressing specific issues / priorities and concerns—both within the community council and the general community.

Objective: To provide and develop a progression of leadership opportunities for community residents both within community education and in the general community.

Measurement Criteria:

  1. Identify citizen leadership roles on the council and other volunteer task groups.
  2. Identify leadership role progression of leaders (from council to school board to city council, etc.).
  3. Assess the options available for citizenship leadership opportunities.
