Community Education Tool Kit: Role of the Advisory Council Member
This is a brief overview of the advisory council role in community education.
What is their role?
- To provide community input and involvement as it relates to the planning,
growth, development of the community education program.
- To provide community input and involvement as related to the planning,
growth, development of a total community school operation
Who is on the council: Generally speaking a council is comprised of...
- Several members of the community at-large (senior citizens, parents, teens, scout troops, athletic association, etc.)
- Representatives from the school
- Representatives from community organizations, such as 4H, Lions,etc.
- Representatives from city government
What is a council members responsibility?
- Assist the director to plan, organize and develop programs and services for youth teens, adults, and senior citizens
- To with the director to determine community needs
- To finds ways to improve the school and community
Sample Accomplishments:
- Administer surveys, compile data and analyze results
- Sponsoring family related activities and special events
- Promote and fund a recycling center
- Opening a food shelve
- Starting a daycare center
- Assist in developing a Big Brother program
- Sponsoring a Community Health day and Arts awareness program
- Coordinating city recreation programs
- Organize and sponsor a family fund day
- Conduct and support school fund raising to help pay for an elementary playground
