Employment Opportunities With the Department of Public Instruction

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) employs people in a wide array of job categories including teachers, education consultants and specialists, information systems specialists, accountants, administrative support staff, maintenance staff, and librarians, to name but a few. We have four major employing units: the Madison employing unit including offices in downtown Madison and our reference and loan library on the city's east side; the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan; the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Janesville; and the Wisconsin Educational Opportunities Programs (WEOP) and Office of Urban Education in Milwaukee. In addition, there are small WEOP offices in Ashland, Eau Claire, Green Bay, Wausau and Racine.

The DPI fills vacant positions throughout the year. Applications for most positions are accepted during specific recruitment periods. The following site lists positions for which we are currently recruiting. The listing describes the job, provides information on pay, location, and the method of application.

Employment with the DPI offers a challenging work environment and a variety of promotional and educational opportunities. All DPI employees are valued team members and we encourage staff to develop their abilities by pursuing career and personal growth opportunities.

The DPI offers many fringe benefits in addition to competitive pay for permanent, civil service positions. Applicants for these permanent positions must participate in some type of job-related examination that will measure qualifications to perform the job. The method of examination will depend on the type of job being filled. The exam may consist of one or more of the following: a written test (essay or multiple choice), a rating of your training and experience, a performance test, or an oral examination. Each recruitment announcement identifies the type of application and screening process for that position.

The DPI also has opportunities for temporary employment. These temporary, or limited term employment (LTE) opportunities, are limited to 1,043 hours in a year and may be either full-time or part-time. Although LTE positions do not offer benefits, they may provide valuable work experience and an opportunity to explore different types of employment with the department. LTE opportunities are listed under DPI Employment Opportunities.
