The Department of Public Instruction, the Division for Finance and Management, is currently seeking a Director for the School Nutrition Team. The position is located at 125 South Webster Street, Madison.

Starting salary will be between $59,405 and $98,021 per year. This position is in pay schedule 81, range 01. A two-year career executive trial period may be required.

Job Duties

This position will provide overall direction and leadership for the Division of Finance and Management’s School Nutrition Team in carrying out the Department of Public Instruction’s administrative responsibility for federal and state funded school nutrition programs including the National School Lunch, School Breakfast and Special Milk programs; the USDA Donated Food Distribution Program; the State Elderly Nutrition Improvement Program; the School Breakfast Program (state); and the Wisconsin School Day Milk Program. Responsibility includes administration of three grant programs: the Kohl Breakfast Grant, the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, and the Administrative Review and Training Program. This position will supervise a team leader, program assistant, and commodity staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced knowledge and demonstrated leadership experience with USDA federally funded Child Nutrition Programs; state funded Child Nutrition Programs; recruitment, selection and supervision practices for professional and support staff. Ability to recommend needed legislation; provide training to facilitate staff performance at the objective level; interpret rules, requirements, and procedures regarding administration of grants administered through the School Nutrition Team. Administrative skills related to interpreting legislation and regulations to develop processes necessary to facilitate compliance with regulations and to promote program and fiscal integrity related to program application, fiscal claiming and commodity allocation. Effective oral and written communication skills.

Include specific examples of work with legislation and regulation interpretation, involvement in the biennial budget process, and drafting and interpreting evaluative reports and surveys.
2) Developing processes to comply with and promote child nutrition programs. Include examples such as providing onsite management assistance, providing leadership or working as a team member to ensure fairness and consistency regarding program evaluation reviews of school or institution food service operations and promoting nutrition issues.
3) Management of grants for an organizational area. Include your specific training/experience in interpreting rules requirements and procedures, writing, administering, tracking progress, budgeting, and writing reports related to the grant; and
4) Applying leadership, team building, and/or supervisory techniques while serving as a team leader, supervisor, manager, or in a similar capacity. Please include specific examples such as employee or team member selection, division of work assignments, monitoring project timelines and budgets, performance evaluations, facilitating effective workgroups, goal setting, and employee or team member discipline.
