Social Worker - Wisconsin School for the Deaf

The Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin School for the Deaf is currently seeking a Social Worker. This full-time school year (80%) position is located at 309 W. Walworth Avenue, Delavan.

Position shift: Sunday 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Monday - Thursday 1:30 pm - 11:00 pm (Shift is subject to change based on program needs.)

Starting pay is $17.539 per hour (approximately $29,300 per year). This position is in pay schedule 12, range 06. A twelve-month probationary period is required.

Job Duties

Provide social work services, as well as a variety of other services with and for the students, staff, and parents at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD). Provide on-going social work case services to individual children. Provide social work services to WSD families of hearing impaired children, provide crisis prevention, transitional counseling and short term problem solving to exceptional needs children. Be on call during work and off duty hours (via pager) to respond to student crisis situations. Provide suicide interventions for students and provide follow-up services to appropriate individuals in response to crisis. Serve as liaison between WSD students and the Delevan community and between WSD students and their home communities. Serve as a member of the Pupil Services Team to assist in communication and coordinate efforts on behalf of individual pupils and the well being of all students.

Special Requirement

Licensed or eligible for licensure as a School Social Worker (50) with the Department of Public Instruction. An American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating level of 2+ at hire and 3 upon the completion of probation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of individual and group counseling skills; interviewing techniques, reporting and communication strategies for dealing with families; the legal impact on student, school and families with regard to abuse/neglect and other federal and state regulations/laws; the role of the social worker as a support staff individual in the Individual Education Program preparation and implementation; and intervention techniques, behavior management, suicide, substance abuse, child sexual abuse, prevention, principals of social work and child development. Knowledge of and respect for Deaf Culture. Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
