Elementary Social Studies at Grade 4

Proficiency Level Proficiency Descriptors

Advanced

Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of important knowledge and skills drawn from civics, economics, geography, history and culture.

Demonstrates distinguished level of:

  • application and recall of content knowledge;
  • process, analysis, and interpretation of data from multiple sources; and
  • making inferences, creating, constructing and justifying responses.
(scale scores 661 and above)

Proficient

Demonstrates a competent understanding of important concepts and skills drawn from civics, economics, geography, history and culture.

Demonstrates adequate level of:

  • recall of content knowledge;
  • reading, interpretation of and completion of maps, charts, graphs, and pictures;
  • reading, analysis , drawing conclusions and making inferences from written information and using supporting reasoning.
(scale scores 627 to 660)

Basic

Demonstrates somewhat competent understanding of concepts and skills drawn from civics, economics, geography, history and culture.

Demonstrates inconsistent and incomplete:

  • recall of content knowledge; and
  • location of information on maps, charts, graphs, pictures and written sources.
(scale scores 608 to 626)

Minimal Performance

Limited achievement. Evidence of major misconceptions or gaps in the knowledge and skills tested.

Middle Level Social Studies at Grade 8

Proficiency Level Proficiency Descriptors

Advanced

Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of knowledge and skills drawn from civics, economics, geography, history and culture.

Demonstrates distinguished level of:

  • recall and application of content knowledge;
  • interpretation of maps, graphs, and other visual information and primary and secondary sources;
  • drawing conclusions and making predictions;
  • communication of complete explanations; and
  • analysis, synthesis, and investigation of problems, issues and situations.
(scale scores 702 and above)

Proficient

Demonstrates a competent understanding of knowledge and skills drawn from civics, economics, geography, history and culture.

Demonstrates adequate level of:

  • recall and application of content knowledge;
  • interpretation of maps, graphs, and other visual information and primary and secondary sources;
  • drawing conclusions and making predictions;
  • communicating explanations; and
  • analysis, synthesis, and investigation of problems, issues and situations.

Basic

Demonstrates distinguished level of:
  • recall and application of content knowledge;
  • interpretation of maps, graphs, and other visual information and primary and secondary sources;
  • drawing conclusions and making predictions;
  • communication of explanations; and
  • analysis, synthesis, and investigation of problems, issues and situations.
(scale scores 721 and above)

Proficient

Demonstrates competent understanding of higher level knowledge and skills drawn from civics, economics, geography, history and culture.

Demonstrates adequate level of:
  • recall and application of content knowledge;
  • interpretation of maps, graphs, and other visual information and primary and secondary sources;
  • drawing conclusions and making predictions;
  • communication of explanations; and
  • analysis, synthesis, and investigation of problems, issues and situations.
(scale scores 692 to 720)

Basic
