Collaborative Summer Library Program
Each year the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) coordinates a summer reading program on behalf of Wisconsin's public libraries. Wisconsin is a member of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). In 2007 there will be 41 member states in CSLP. Through CSLP Wisconsin libraries are able to purchase high quality materials at low cost needed for the program.
"Catch the Reading Bug" is the children's theme in 2008, and "Metamorphosis @ Your Library" is the teen theme.
2008 Illustrators
The illustrator for the 2008 children's poster is Harry Bliss. Bliss is an award-winning cartoonist and cover artist for The New Yorker magazine. He grew up in a family of successful painters and illustrators. He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and illustration at The University of the Arts (BFA) and Syracuse University (MA). He is the illustrator of several best-selling children's books, including "A Fine, Fine School" by Sharon Creech and "Diary of a Worm" and "Diary of a Spider," both by Doreen Cronin. Bliss lives in Vermont.
The 2008 teen poster art was created by Jan Duursema. Duursema is a graphic artist who illustrated the Dark Horse Comics' Star War series. His work for Marvel Comics includes The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine, X-Factor, and X-Men. He also created work for DC Comics characters Hawkman and Wonder Woman.
Television PSAs
CLSP has two video Public Service Announcements (PSAs) available on the CSLP Web site. The PSAs may be downloaded free by any libraries in CSLP member states. These PSAs may be used without restriction by public libraries to promote their summer library programs.
- Children's Television PSA. The creation of children's PSA was coordinated by the CSLP Marketing Committee, Chaired by Patty Langley, Delaware. The children's PSA features Harry Bliss' characters from the poster art animated to a lively song in somewhat of a Beach Boys' tradition. Download English and Spanish versions of the children's PSA from www.cslpreads.org/2008/PSA/kidspsa.htm
- Teen's Television PSAs. Jasmine Rockwell, Chair of the Teen Committee, coordinated the creation of the teen psa. There are four versions of the teen PSA, featuring four teens, a boy and girl who Caucasian and two who are African-American. All four versions are available in Spanish. The segments were filmed on location in a library and feature the "alien" character from the teen poster. Magical things happen and books take wing. Download English and Spanish versions of the young adult's PSAs from www.cslpreads.org/2008/PSA/yapsa.htm
The CSLP web page has information on how to get air time, and tips and tricks on using PSAs.
Radio PSAs
CSLP has developed radio PSAs for 2007. These free radio spots can be downloaded from the CSLP web page. (http://www.cslpreads.org/psa.htm) The children's radio ad features dog detective, Ike LaRue, writing home to his owner telling her to encourage children to sign up for the summer reading program at their local public library. The teen radio spot features the same audio as the television ad. There is a free poster that features the text of the teen PSAs on the CSLP web page.
Newspapers in Education Ads
North Caroline State Library has mad several Newspapers in Education ads available through CSLP. These newspaper ads were underwritten by a Library Services and Technology Act, (LSTA), grant. The ads are built around the theme "Get a Clue@ Your Library" theme and take the form of fun puzzle-like worksheets for children. In addition to newspapers these ads can be used in library newsletters or simply be used as handouts or fliers. These ads are provided free of charge for use by any library or library supporter.
All of the ads are presented in three different formats (.bmp, .jpg and .tif) for a variety of uses and page layout programs. All ads are black and white and saved out in high resolution (300 DPI).
To view the ads go to the CSLP web page.
PowerPoint Presentation
CSLP has developed a series of PowerPoint templates for use by member libraries. Librarians can take some of the mystery out of preparing PowerPoint Presentations for their summer reading program. There is a new assortment of blank PowerPoint slides at: http://summerreading.cla-net.org/mediastuff2007.html. These templates can be mixed and matched or disassembled and used as needed. They can be used for creating presentations for school visits, in-library promotions, and lobby kiosks, or for presentations on local public access cable television stations.
