Cassette Books for Kindergarten-Grade 3

Asare, Meshack. Sosu's Call. Sosu and his dog, Fusa, warn the inhabitants of an African village of a threatening violent storm even though Sosu cannot use his legs to walk. The villagers show their appreciation with a special gift. RC 55390.

Balian, Lorna. The Aminal. Patrick catches a small "aminal" in his lunch bag. As one friend tells another during recess, the "aminal" grows in size, hunger, and fierceness until the fearful friends decide that they must rescue Patrick. RC 07547.

Begay, Shonto. Ma'ii and Cousin Horned Toad: a traditional Navajo story. Maíi the coyote is hungry, as usual, so he decides to visit his cousin, Horned Toad, who is hard at work in his cornfield. Maíi hates to work and goes from one cousin to the next to get food and a sleeping place. After a delicious meal, Maíi decides he wants his cousin's entire cornfield, and tricks and swallows him. But Horned Toad teaches Maíi a lesson that he will never forget. RC 36522

Calhoun, Mary. Hot-Air Henry. A sassy Siamese cat stows away on a hot-air balloon and ends up taking a fur-raising flight across the mountains. RCW 2043.

Erdrich, Louise. Grandmother's Pigeon. Passenger pigeon hatchlings, thought to be extinct, are discovered in Grandmother's room after she departs on a voyage to Greenland. A beautifully written story portraying a close, compassionate Native American family. RCW 304.

Ets, Marie Hall. Mr. Penny's Circus. Mr. Penny cares for a chimpanzee and a bear during the winter, and by County Fair time these two circus animals have taught his own barnyard pets many tricks. RCW 1010.

Howe, James. Pinky and Rex and the Just-Right Pet. Pinky wants a dog but the rest of the family decides on adopting a cat. When they bring a kitten home Pinky is surprised that it likes him best. RC 57880.

Christelow, Eileen. The Robbery at the Diamond Dog Diner. With diamond robbers in town, Glenda Feathers talks too much about where Lola Dog's diamonds are hidden. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 13.

Cowcher, Helen. Tigress. As the monkeys let out a shrill warning, the tigress leaves the Indian wildlife sanctuary, following the scents of goats and camels. She kills a young bullock and a stray camel. The herdsmen are upset. They cannot afford such losses. Elliot, Joey. Scamp's New Home. Scamp the otter must search out a new hunting ground. Lonely, he finds other sea otters and brings them to his new home at the mouth of the Alsek River in Alaska. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 39.

George, William T. Box Turtle at Long Pond. A box turtle is followed through a typical day, including searching for food and an encounter with a raccoon. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 50.

Hurd, Thatcher. Mama Don't Allow. Miles and his swamp band play for the alligators' dinner dance, and nearly become the main course. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 22.

Leaf, Munro. The Story of Ferdinand. Ferdinand likes to sit quietly and smell the flowers, but one day he's stung by a bee, and his snorting and stomping convince everyone he's the fiercest of bulls. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 25.

Haas, Jessie. Birthday Pony. Popcorn (Grandma Aggie's pony) and Jane (Aggie's granddaughter) were born on the same day, but it takes a long time and a lot of work before Popcorn and Jane become riding partners. Print-braille. BR 15921.

Kipling, Rudyard. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. A young mongoose is found by an English family in India and, following his instincts, he stalks and kills poisonous snakes in their garden. His courage endears him to everyone. Print-braille. BR 11015.

McDonald, Megan. Tundra Mouse: a Storyknife Tale. Using a traditional technique called story-knifing, two Yupik Eskimo sisters share a story about the mice that made a nest out of tinsel from the Christmas tree. Print-braille. BRW 38.

Redmond, Shirley R. Lewis and Clark: a Prairie Dog for the President. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sends explorers Lewis and Clark across the country to map the land and bring back plants and animals. The men capture a prairie dog and send it to Washington for everyone to see. Print-braille. BR 15201.

Van West, Patricia E. The Crab Man. When Neville sees the hermit crabs which he so gently collected being mistreated by the crab man at a Jamaican hotel, he no longer wants to supply them but would thereby forfeit his income. Print-braille. BRW 63.

Waboose, Jan Bourdeau. Morning on the Lake. In the first of three linked stories, a young boy and his grandfather set out in a canoe early one spring morning. Throughout the day, under the patient and gentle guidance of his grandfather, the boy gradually comes to respect the ways of nature and to understand his own place in the world. Print-braille. Zolotow, Charlotte. The Poodle Who Barked at the Wind. Once there was a family with a little black poodle. She was a noisy little dog who barked at everything. Clymer, Eleanor L. Horatio Goes to the Country. Horatio the cat hates everything about his forced visit to the farm until he ventures out one glorious moonlit night to explore the meadow. RC 17827.

Goble, Paul. The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses. A tale of a young Native American girl who loved horses in a very special way. The people in her village noticed how she understood the wild horses, and how she could speak softly and the horses would follow her. Although fond of her parents and her tribe, the girl would at last become one of the Horse People. RC 38551.

Hill, Elizabeth Starr. Bird Boy. Chang, a mute Chinese boy, communicates better with his father's cormorants--specially trained fishing birds--than with people. One boy, Jinan, always teases him, but Jinan's sister Mei Mei becomes Chang's friend. She helps him save his beloved cormorant chick from danger. RC 50364.

Hurwitz, Johanna. One Small Dog. After his parents divorce, Curtis thinks having a dog will make him happy. But he finds that taking care of a twelve-week-old puppy can make him sad, especially when the dog bites. RC 51870.

Paterson, Katherine. The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks. A pair of mandarin ducks, separated by a cruel lord who wishes to possess the drake for his colorful beauty, reward a compassionate couple who risk their lives to reunite the ducks. RC 32701.

Shub, Elizabeth. The White Stallion. Carried away from her wagon train in Texas in 1845 by the old mare she is riding, a little girl is befriended by a white stallion. RC 20193.

Wargin, Kathy-Jo. The Legend of Sleeping Bear. In this retelling of an Ojibwe Indian tale, a mother bear loses sight of her two cubs as they all attempt to escape a forest fire by swimming across Lake Michigan. RCW 253.

Cohen, Barbara. The Carp in the Bathtub. Two children try to rescue the carp their mother plans to make into gefilte fish for the Passover Seder. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 14.

Jimenez, Francisco. La Mariposa. Because he can only speak Spanish, Francisco, son of a migrant worker, has trouble when he begins first grade, but his fascination with the caterpillar in the classroom helps him begin to fit in. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 87.

Thompson-Hoffman, Susan. Delver's Danger. A bank beaver, dwelling in the bank of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, enlists the help of every member of the beaver clan to protect the family and the newborns from a flood. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 52.

Thompson-Hoffman, Susan. Tassel's Mission. A tassel-eared squirrel embarks on a perilous mission down the Bright Angel Creek of the Grand Canyon to find her family. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 55.

Turner, Pamela S. Hachiko: the True Story of a Loyal Dog. Relates the true story of a dog who accompanied his master to and from a Tokyo train station for a year, and, after his master died, continued to wait for him there every day for many years. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 134.

Wildsmith, Brian. The Bremen Town Band. A donkey too old for farm work sets off for Bremen to sing with the town band. Along the way, he collects some other animals. But they change their plan after finding a house full of robbers. Adaptation of a story from the Brothers Grimm. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 111.

Braille for Grade 3-6

Arnold, Caroline. Llama. For thousands of years llamas have been bred in the Andes mountains of South America to transport goods in places where cars and trucks cannot go, and their wool has been woven into beautiful and warm clothing. More recently they have also been bred in North America, to carry gear for hikers, as pets, and for their wool. This book features Gypsy, a baby llama born on a ranch in California. Print-braille. Chekhov, Anton. Kashtanka. A chestnut-colored dog named Kashtanka gets lost on a snowy evening while walking with her master. She is taken in by a kind circus clown and taught to do tricks. But she still longs for her home. Print-braille. BR 10042

Gardiner, John. Stone Fox. Ten-year-old Willy enjoys life with his grandfather on a small potato farm in Wyoming, until the elderly man seems to give up on life. Willy is determined to keep the farm going and harvests an entire crop with just his dog, Searchlight. Now he must earn $500 to pay the taxes. BR 07825.

Henry, Marguerite. Brighty of the Grand Canyon. The story of a Grand Canyon burro, and the kind old prospector whose death he avenges. BRW 517.

Lewin, Ted. Gorilla Walk. The authors recount their 1997 trek into a Uganda game preserve to observe mountain gorillas. They describe their arduous hike into the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, how the trackers located the silverbacks, and the behavior of the animals. Print-braille. BR 13020.

Wiseman, Bernard. Barber Bear. Barber Bear of Puntown gives "bearcuts" to the animals who want to look nice for the big dance. He also serves up a stream of silly puns. Print-braille. BR 07910.

Cassette Books for Grade 3-6

Avi. The Good Dog. McKinley, a malamute, is torn between the domestic world of his human family and the wild world of Lupin, a wolf that is trying to recruit dogs to replenish the dwindling wolf pack. RCW 599.

Baylor, Byrd. Hawk, I'm Your Brother. Determined to learn to fly, Rudy Soto adopts a hawk, hoping that their kinship will bring him closer to his goal. RCW 5727.

Hansen, Rosanna. Panda: a Guide Horse for Ann. Everyone knows about guide dogs for the blind. But guide horses? Panda is a miniature horse, one of the first to be trained to help Ann Edie, a blind woman. Readers are introduced to Panda and Ann and taken through their day together. While the woman teaches at a high school, Panda stays nearby. She accompanies Ann to the grocery store, and on a picnic. She's truly part of the family. RCW 672.

Henry, Marguerite. Brown Sunshine of Sawdust Valley. Molly wants a horse of her own, but when her father's mare gives birth to a mule, Molly changes her mind and raises the newborn. RC 44027.

McClung, Robert M. Lili: a Giant Panda of Sichuan. Follows the first several years of a female giant panda in the Chinese province of Sichuan and presents historical commentary on man's relationship with pandas. RC 30904.

Sattler, Helen Roney. Stegosaurs: the Solar-powered Dinosaurs. Discusses the armor-plated dinosaur called Stegosaurus and some of its lesser-known relatives. RC 36664.

Book Kits for Grade 3-6

Adler, David A. Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Dinosaur Bones. When she notices some bones missing from a dinosaur skeleton exhibited in the museum, a young girl with a photographic memory tries to discover who has been taking them and why. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 105.

Mueller, Tobin J. Danger, Dinosaurs! A musical comedy by a Wisconsin composer/lyricist about the evolution and extinction of the dinosaurs. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 57.

New Mexico People & Energy Collective. Red Ribbons for Emma. Emma Yazzie is a Navajo shepherd and grandmother. She's also a political hero for her brave challenge to the Four Corners Power Plant which is destroying her desert environment. By pulling their survey stakes and red ribbons from the ground while she watches her sheep, Emma is keeping an important grass-roots rebellion alive. Print-braille and cassette. Kit 63.

Featherly, Jay. Mustangs: Wild Horses of the American West. Wild horses have roamed the American West for hundreds of years. They are descendants of tame horses brought to the New World by Spanish explorers. This book describes their habitats, survival instincts, behavior patterns, fights, and playful activities. Henry, Marguerite. Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin. A young boy wants to be an artist, but in a Quaker family in 18th-century Pennsylvania such a career is not favored. This story tells how Benjamin's ambition is assisted by the cat. BRW 103.

Houston, James A. Akavak; an Eskimo Journey. Because Grandfather is old and wishes to see his brother again before he dies, 13-year-old Akavak must drive the dog sled for the long, treacherous journey back to grandfather's old home. BR 01123.

Kjelgaard, Jim. Big Red. Seventeen-year-old Danny Pickett takes a shine to a big red Irish setter on a nearby ranch. Naming the dog "Red," he uses him to help hunt a dangerous bear who's been killing livestock. BR 12530.

Parker, Nancy Winslow. Bugs. Horseflies, ants, fleas, and crickets! This book presents jokes, general information, and brief descriptions of the characteristics, habits, and environments of sixteen common insects. BR 07529.

Cassette Books for Grade 4-7

Coatsworth, Elizabeth. The Cat Who Went to Heaven. Soon after adopting a lucky three-colored cat, a poor Japanese artist is hired to paint a masterpiece. The devoted pet watches patiently as the man draws the animals Buddha has blessed. At last he draws a cat and earns a special miracle. RC 58398.

Kjelgaard, Jim. Chip, the Dam Builder. When disaster strikes the beaver colony, Chip, the wise leader, starts out in search of a new home. RCW 274.

O'Brien, Jack. Silver Chief, Dog of the North. After Silver Chief sees his mother, a Husky, killed, he begins to hate all mankind. But Sergeant Jim Thorne of the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police determines to capture Silver Chief and make him his friend. RCW 3677.

Patent, Dorothy Hinshaw. The Whooping Crane: a Comeback Story. Traces the forty-year-old and ongoing attempt to save the endangered whooping crane from extinction, focusing on efforts at wildlife refuges and the captive breeding program. RC 30532.

Pringle, Laurence. Dog of Discovery: a Newfoundland's Adventures with Lewis and Clark. An account of the Meriwether Lewis and William Clark expedition to the Pacific Ocean in 1804-1806 that features the exploits of Lewis's large Newfoundland, Seaman. RC 56530.

Redmond, Ian. The Elephant Book: For the Elefriends Campaign. The Elefriends organization presents facts and quotations about elephants to alert readers about the serious decrease in the world's elephant population. Details their physical characteristics, habitat, feeding patterns, social relationships, and why the herds are in decline. RC 55389.

Ryden, Hope. The Little Deer of the Florida Keys. A close look at the appealing little deer of the Florida keys, who grow no bigger than a large dog. Explores such questions as how these deer evolved, and tells the dramatic story of the herd's near extinction. RC 15427.

Louis Braille Center. Braille Workbox: Aesop's Fables. This 4-part unit explores the development and use of Braille, using Aesop's animal fables as a learning text. Kit 130.

Braille for Grade 5-8

Bausum, Ann. Dragon Bones and Dinosaur Eggs: a Photobiography of Explorer Roy Chapman Andrews. A biography of the great explorer-adventurer who discovered huge fields of dinosaur bones and a complete nest of dinosaur eggs in Mongolia during the 1920s. Explains how Andrews pioneered modern paleontology field research using a team of specialists on his five expeditions to Asia. BR 13242.

De Wit, Dorothy. The Talking Stone: an Anthology of Native American Tales and Legends. A glimpse into the rich folklore of the Indians. These stories deal with tribal history and heroes, the much loved trickster figures, and the origins of various animals and celestial bodies. BR 05689.

Dillon, Eilís. A Herd of Deer. Ostracized by the villagers, a newcomer to the community hires a 15-year-old Irish boy to discover why some of the deer are disappearing from the herd. BR 02168.

Ellis, Mel. Flight of the White Wolf. A boy and his pet white wolf flee before a state-wide hunt to locate and destroy the animal. BRW 2187.

George, Jean Craighead. Charlie's Raven. When thirteen-year-old Charlie takes a baby raven from its nest, he hopes the bird will cure his grandfather, who is recuperating from a heart attack. The grandfather, a retired naturalist, enjoys the chick's antics. He encourages Charlie to scientifically study the effect of ravens on humans. BR 15801.

Gipson, Fred. Old Yeller. The story of a boy and a big stray dog which he resented at first, but came to love and depend on. The excitement, hardship, and tragedy of pioneer life in Texas in the 1860s are graphically described. BRA 01734.

Morey, Walt. Gentle Ben. Thirteen-year-old Mark secretly befriends and tames a cruelly chained 5-year-old Alaskan brown bear, feared for its size and unpredictable behavior. BR 00448.

Cassette Books for Grade 5-8

Aaseng, Nathan K. Poisonous Creatures. Explores the diverse world of poisonous animals that employ a kind of "chemical warfare" for hunting their food or for protecting themselves from predators. RC 49050.

Eckert, Allan W. Incident at Hawk's Hill. A shy, lonely six-year-old wanders into the Canadian prairie and spends a summer under the protection of a badger. RC 38913.

Harrah, Madge. Honey Girl. Dorothy Stahmann earned the nickname "Honey Girl" because she helped her family raise bees. In 1907, she had the adventure of a lifetime when she and her family--and the bees--moved from Wisconsin to Arkansas on a barge down the Mississippi River. RCW 1571.

Hubler, Marsha. The Winning Summer. Although Skye has looked forward to teaching Katie, a blind camper, about riding and handling horses, Katie's bitterness over being blind and her parents' upcoming divorce challenge Skye's ability to teach and to share. RCW 670.

Kelsey-Wood, Dennis. Pot-bellied Pigs: a Complete and Up-to-date Guide. While praising the good qualities of pot-bellies, the author warns they are not ideal pets for everyone. He explains how to choose a pet pig and how to house and feed it and provides tips on training and health care. RC 51641.

Kjelgaard, Jim. Trading Jeff and His Dog. Jeff Tarrant, an itinerant peddler, finds a dog and a home in the Appalachian mountains. RCW 275.

Montgomery, Sy. Search for the Golden Moon Bear: Science and Adventure in the Asian Tropics. Account of a biologist's expedition to Southeast Asia to locate a mysterious honey-colored bear, possibly a new species. Relates visiting mountain jungles and remote marketplaces, examining sun bears and moon bears, and gathering hairs for DNA clues to the golden bear's evolution. RC 59945.

North, Sterling. The Wolfling: a Documentary Novel Of The 1870s. A 12-year-old living on a farm in Wisconsin in the mid-19th century delights in the woods and wildlife, and is helped by a Swedish neighbor to find and train a wolf cub who becomes his constant companion. RCW 4088.

Ryden, Hope. Wild Horse Summer. Alison spends her thirteenth summer on a ranch in Wyoming where she learns to ride a horse and where Kelly, who is blind, helps her overcome an old fear. RCW 682.
