Awards Recognize Efforts of Rural Schools, Communities, and Libraries |
|
State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster presented her first Standing Up for Rural Schools, Communities, and Libraries awards on March 9 during the annual Small Schools Conference in Wisconsin Rapids. The awards recognize the efforts of Wisconsin rural communities that have advocated for their schools, libraries, and way of life at a time when many are threatened by difficult financial challenges. "We have strong schools because of the capable teachers and administrators, engaged business and community leaders, and active parents working together to keep schools strong," Burmaster said.
An award was presented to: The rural School District of Florence County is fighting for its life and has found within its midst a community and education advocate in Mr. Hank Murphy, owner and editor of The Florence Mining News. After majoring in journalism at UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh, Hank moved to West Texas in 1985, serving for 19 years in a variety of news positions, including reporter and editor. He assumed ownership of The Florence Mining News in November, 2004, amidst controversy pitting adequate funding for education against property tax increases. With the impending February 15 referendum to exceed the revenue limits, Mr. Murphy took an objective editorial stand on the issue, which was a brave step as a new business owner in the Florence County area. Through his unbiased reporting prior to the referendum, he provided the public with factual information, while allowing news coverage of opposing viewpoints on the issue. Hank offered a fair and balanced analysis of the issues surrounding the referendum and is to be commended for his advocacy on behalf of rural education.
