On the Road

On November 28, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster, a member of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board, attended the board meeting in Madison. Later that day, Burmaster met with the PK-16 Leadership Council Principals for future agenda planning.

On November 30, Burmaster welcomed teachers, school administrators, school food service personnel, and nutrition professionals to a summit to develop action plans for creating a healthy school environment. The summit provided an opportunity for participants to learn about the latest in nutrition and fitness programs, meet and learn from their colleagues from other schools, and develop strategies to move forward with school wellness.

“We know that one of the ways to begin closing the achievement gap is to ensure that all students are properly fed and healthy so they can concentrate on learning,” said Burmaster. “We also know that proper nutrition is critical to the health and well-being of students. That is why we need nutrition and health programs that support a readiness to learn. We have taken this effort seriously in Wisconsin.”

The event was organized by Wisconsin Action for Healthy Kids, a coalition of concerned health, nutrition, activity, and education professionals working for school wellness, and sponsored by a USDA Team Nutrition Grant and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

Also on November 30, Burmaster traveled to Weston to visit with school staff and students, tour the school, and announce a grant from the Department of Public Instruction’s Safe and Drug Free Schools Technical Assistance Fund to support school safety and security upgrades.
