On the Road

On February 1, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster spoke at the AWSA Associate Principals Conference in Madison. In thanking the group for their selfless dedication to their schools and students, Burmaster said, “I walked in your shoes. I know the challenges of student discipline and the joys of working to focus a school on student achievement and success, creating a supportive learning environment, and bringing a diverse school community together in unity and celebration.” Burmaster also presented the organization’s Associate Principal of the Year Award to Mike Kruse of Verona High School.

Burmaster joined Governor Doyle, Mayor Tom Barrett, members of the legislature, educators and other education and community leaders at Elm Creative Arts Elementary School for the Governor’s unveiling of numerous budget proposals directed to help Milwaukee. The Governor formally announced his budget on February 13.

On February 8, Burmaster attended the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents meeting in Madison. On February 9, the state superintendent offered words of welcome to reading educators who gathered for the Wisconsin State Reading Association Convention in Milwaukee. In her remarks, Burmaster praised the educators offering, “Much has been accomplished in the past year. Because of the work of WSRA and others, educators around our state have worked hard to raise achievement and close the achievement gap. They are beating the odds and their efforts are paying off.”

On Tuesday February 12, Burmaster attended the Wisconsin Women Forward for Environmental Education luncheon sponsored by the Wisconsin Environmental Education Foundation. The following day, Burmaster traveled for a meeting of the CESA 4 Professional Advisory Council where she gave an update to local education leaders.

The state superintendent joined representatives from Wisconsin’s private and religious schools on February 15 at Wisconsin Council for Religious and Independent Schools’ Leadership Conference. Burmaster’s remarks kicked off the statewide biennial conference for the school principals for religious and independent schools. In speaking on the importance of education, Burmaster said, “we are not just creating an educated workforce for the 21st century, we are creating something even more important: citizens. Just as children must learn how to spell, they also must learn the meaning of justice, free speech, community, and responsibility so that we strengthen our democracy.”
