Elizabeth Burmaster |
On the RoadOn March 27, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster addressed the Wisconsin Educational Media Association Legislative Forum at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison. “As state superintendent and a former teacher and principal, I know the critical role a robust school library program plays in our schools. School libraries are the epicenter of the school experience,” she told the audience of school librarians, educational technology specialists, teachers, school board members, and administrators. Later that morning, Burmaster attended the quarterly meeting of the Governor’s Council on Workforce Investment in Madison. The council, established by the governor, focuses on our state’s workforce future. Later in the day, Burmaster met with Laurent Maillaud, cultural attaché at the French Consulate; Robby Judes, deputy consul, French Education at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C.; and Gilles Bousquet, dean of international studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The group continued on-going discussions about French and Wisconsin student exchanges, teacher seminars, and promoting other educational opportunities. Finally, Burmaster attended the Governor's Financial Literacy Awards Ceremony at the Executive Residence. She joined First Lady Doyle in recognizing 12 individuals and 13 organizations with the 2007 Governor’s Financial Literacy Awards. The awards recognize excellence in promoting financial literacy among Wisconsin citizens. Burmaster gave opening remarks at the AWSA Adolescent Literacy Workshop in Madison on March 28. She encouraged educators to continue their efforts to ensure that all students read at grade-level. "Learning to read proficiently is a critical element in adolescents’ ability to be successful in learning, in the workforce, and as a global citizen. Reading is the fundamental skill that separates children who succeed from those who struggle," said Burmaster. On March 29, Burmaster met with the deans of Education Organizations during the spring meeting of the Wisconsin Association of Colleges of Teacher Education.
