In her role as president of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster presided over the CCSSO's 2007 Legislative Conference April 22-24 in Washington, D.C. She presented welcoming remarks and facilitated the April 23 session on Reauthorization for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known an the No Child Left Behind Act. Burmaster served as chair of the CCSSO's ESEA reauthorization committee.

On April 26, Burmaster participated in the Wisconsin Higher Education Business Roundtable quarterly meeting. The roundtable, Department of Public Instruction, University of Wisconsin System, and other partners developed the Wisconsin Covenant, which is included in the governor's 2007-09 budget.

Burmaster welcomed participants to the Peer Consultation/ Truancy Abatement networking meeting April 27 in Madison. Representatives from the Beloit, Green Bay, Janesville, Kenosha, Madison, Menominee Indian, Milwaukee, Racine, and Waukesha school districts shared information about successes and areas that need improvement to increase regular attendance in their districts.
