Elizabeth Burmaster |
On the roadOn Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster convened the first meeting of the ADP/P21 (American Diploma Project/Partnership for 21st Century Skills) Leadership and Design Teams, who will be taking a critical look at Wisconsin's ten-year-old Model Academic Standards for two subjects, English language arts and mathematics, to ensure they are aligned with postsecondary and workforce expectations. Wisconsin is the first state to sign on to both the ADP and P21 national efforts in its work to make sure that high school standards are rigorous and relevant enough to effectively prepare students. Wisconsin's ADP/P21 Leadership Team includes education leaders, representatives of the business community, and parents. The Leadership Team will provide oversight and vision for the Design Team, which is composed of exit-level high school teachers and entry-level post-secondary teachers—people with the expertise to examine the standards closely. The two teams will present their recommendations to State Superintendent Burmaster in May 2008 after a year of study and discussion involving public groups and educators. Later on May 31, Burmaster participated in a meeting of Governor Jim Doyle's Cabinet Work Group on Children and Families with Secretary Roberta Gassman of the Department of Workforce Development, Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton, Secretary Matt Frank of the Department of Corrections, Secretary Kevin Hayden of the Department of Health and Family Services, and Secretary Celia Jackson of the Department of Regulation and Licensing.
