Elizabeth Burmaster |
1. On the roadOn Monday, September 17, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster addressed the Lincoln County Retired Educators at Club Modern in Merrill. The group, organized in 1970, includes retired teachers, aides, and other school staff members, primarily from the Merrill and Tomahawk school districts. The state superintendent congratulated the organization for its public service projects, and updated them on her efforts to provide state support for meeting the unique challenges of rural school districts. That evening, Burmaster attended a launch reception for the new book, Creating Equitable Classrooms Through Action Research, at the Ruth Doyle Administration Building in Madison. Aimed at school district leaders, teachers, professional development schools, and preservice teachers, the book presents action research on narrowing the achievement gap, suggests guidelines for conducting action research to support culturally relevant instruction, and provides authentic examples for discussion. Two of the book's editors, Cathy Caro-Bruce and Mary Klehr, work for the Madison Metropolitan School District, while the other two, Ryan Flessner and Kenneth M. Zeichner, are affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Burmaster wrote the forward to the book, which is jointly published by Corwin Press and the National Staff Development Council. On Tuesday, September 18, the state superintendent participated in a meeting of the Wisconsin PGA Junior Foundation, which provides positive opportunities, enjoyment and education to junior golfers statewide. The morning of Thursday, September 20, Burmaster welcomed local superintendents from around the state to the Fall Superintendents Conference, jointly sponsored by the State Superintendent and the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators. The event is an exceptional professional development opportunity for Wisconsin superintendents. Burmaster continued to participate in conference activities through Friday, September 21. At noon on Thursday, Burmaster delivered her annual State of Education address at the state capitol (see article #2). She also presented eleven Friend of Education awards (see article #3) and honored the four Wisconsin Teachers of the Year for 2007-08 (see article #3). See article #4 for links to photos of the event and of each award winner. ![]()
