On Monday, October 29, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster gave testimony to the Wisconsin State Assembly Committee on Education as part of a briefing on the student achievement and assessment tools used in Wisconsin's public schools. Burmaster presented and answered questions from representatives on the development of Wisconsin's current assessments, and concluded by noting that many valid questions have been raised about the use of standardized tests, especially as prescribed by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. She suggested that some critical changes should be made when NCLB is re-authorized.

On Tuesday, October 30, the state superintendent participated in a meeting of Executive Partners of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy, a coalition of education, labor, business, government, university, foundations and community groups whose purpose is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Milwaukee Public Schools.

On Wednesday, October 31, Burmaster visited the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in her capacity as a member of the UW Board of Regents. During her visit, she spoke with Chancellor Richard Telfer; presented a certificate to Professor Lois Smith, recipient of the 2007 Regents Teaching Excellence Award; visited an early childhood special education class; and met with Jeffrey Barnett, dean of the College of Education, and education professors Ann Riall and Robin Fox.
