1. On the roadOn Tuesday, November 6, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster visited Golda Meir School in Milwaukee, a city-wide specialty school for the gifted and talented. While there, Burmaster visited with students and staff and taught a lesson to sixth-graders on global literacy. The lesson, entitled "X Marks the Spot," came from a curriculum authored by Junior Achievement, a non-profit education group that focuses on the content areas of entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy. The state superintendent also met with representatives from Manpower International and Junior Achievement during her visit. After leaving Golda Meir, Burmaster visited Johnson Creek Elementary, where she read to kindergartners, visited with Juanita Edington, music teacher, and participated in a project in Karah Pugh's fourth-grade social studies classroom. The state superintendent also met with Johnson Creek Superintendent Mike Garvey, Elementary Principal Kristine Blakeley, High School Principal Eric Ranzen, and board members and representatives from the school's parent organization. On Wednesday, November 7, the state superintendent traveled to Stevens Point to provide a welcome address to the board of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators, on the occasion of the organization's 23rd annual Small School Conference. She later met with the administrators of the state's 12 Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESAs), who were also meeting in Stevens Point. Burmaster participated in a meeting of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents on Thursday, November 8. Over the weekend of November 9-11, Burmaster attended the annual policy forum of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), a national association of state education leaders.
