On Tuesday, January 8, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster and U.S. Representative Ron Kind held public discussions in Eau Claire and Holmen about the future of No Child Left Behind. Burmaster told the audience "that Wisconsin’s educational community is committed to the intent and principles of NCLB, but that the reauthorization process must remedy this law’s weaknesses in order to truly leave no child behind."

The state superintendent visited the Milwaukee College Preparatory School on Wednesday, January 9, meeting with staff and touring the facilities.

That afternoon, as part of the Milwaukee Public Library's annual Share the Dream Celebration of Martin Luther King Day, Burmaster read to fourth and fifth graders from Clarke Street School. She also spoke to the students about Dr. King’s philosophy of peace and harmony, donated a book to the library, and distributed bookmarks to the children.

On Thursday, January 10, the state superintendent convened the final meeting of her Adolescent Literacy Task Force, thanking participants for their now finalized, comprehensive plan to increase adolescent literacy in Wisconsin.

On Friday, January 11, Burmaster addressed the Council on Library and Network Development (COLAND), a legally mandated group working to ensure all state citizens have access to library and information services. The state superintendent updated the council on initiatives for library support in the 2007-09 state budget, and discussed the need to advocate for certified library media specialists in Wisconsin schools.

As immediate past president of the Council of Chief State School Officers, Burmaster participated in the organization's board meeting the weekend of January 12-13 in Washington, D.C.
