1. On the road

On Wednesday, March 26, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster held a Community Forum, at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee, on the Milwaukee Public Schools District Identified for Improvement Plan which is required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

On Friday, March 28, State Superintendent Burmaster and Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton held a press conference at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design to announce the Wisconsin Task Force on Arts and Creativity in Education and share key results of the recent Education Leaders Institute in Illinois, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Later that day, Burmaster participated in an interview celebrating Sister Joel Read, former president of Alverno College in Milwaukee, who has worked to enhance and improve education—through activities such as laying the groundwork for performance-based educational systems and serving on the Greater Milwaukee Committee.

On Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30, State Superintendent Burmaster assisted U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl in presenting Herb Kohl Educational Foundation awards to Kohl Excellence Scholars, Kohl Teacher Fellows, and Kohl Initiative Scholarship recipients during luncheon events at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee and Monona Grove High School in southern Wisconsin. The ceremonies also included Jim Larson of the Wisconsin Association of CESA Administrators, and Sue Nelson and Jim Moeller of the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools.
