Districts earn Perfect Perkins Performance awards

Perfect Perkins Performance awards went to 113 school districts recently. The awards were made in recognition of the districts meeting indicators of program participation and student achievement in the federal Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education program.

“Providing quality career and technical education programs is part of our New Wisconsin Promise to offer a comprehensive strategy that helps students become active citizens and understand their role in the family, society, and the world of work,” said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster. ”School districts must report extensive information about student achievement and the operation of their career and technical education programs to the Department of Public Instruction. That data is used to help districts improve programming for students, and allows us to recognize districts that are doing an exceptional job of helping students succeed.”

The Perfect Perkins Performance award certificate went to school districts for meeting or making significant progress toward four core indicators. Indicators for Carl Perkins program evaluation focus on students who are concentrating in a career and technical education program by taking at least three courses in one career and technical education area.

Awards were given to districts that had career and technical education participants who:

  • successfully complete academic coursework toward district graduation requirements and successfully complete either a work-based learning program or technical preparatory coursework;

  • graduate from high school at a rate equal to or higher than students who were not career and technical education participants;

  • engage in positive outcomes after graduation, such as pursuing postsecondary education, joining the military, or entering the workforce; and

  • enroll in and complete programs representing non-traditional occupations.

“The schools receiving the Perfect Perkins Performance awards truly reflect quality career and technical education programming and instruction,” Burmaster said. “This excellence in career and technical education that makes our programs some of the best in the nation.”
