Burmaster awards safety grant to Weston School District

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster recently announced a $25,000 grant to support school safety and security improvements in the Weston School District.

As part of the safety and healing process following the September 29 shooting that resulted in the death of Weston Principal John Klang, consultants have recommended a safety plan to upgrade various physical plant systems in the Weston school building. The first phase of the safety plan calls for installing new door locks and alarms, replacing windows, and providing a system to enhance safety communication. The Department of Public Instruction grant, funded with money from the agency’s federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools Technical Assistance allocation, will support those efforts.

“We are grateful to be able to provide this grant to support Weston’s safety plan,” Burmaster said. She noted that schools throughout Wisconsin and the nation routinely evaluate their safe and drug-free schools plans to ensure the well being of students. “Educators work with their local partners—parents, law enforcement, social service providers, and other elected officials—on a regular basis to ensure that our schools continue to be one of the safest places in the community for our children,” she said.
