Burmaster Responds to Governor’s BudgetOn February 13, Governor Jim Doyle introduced his 2007-09 Budget. Information on the Governor’s budget can be found here (http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/budget.asp). The state superintendent released the following statement in response to the budget. “Education is an enduring Wisconsin value. Governor Jim Doyle’s budget upholds this value and supports our students and their futures. “I commend Governor Doyle for advancing numerous sound educational investments: the SAGE program to keep class sizes small, special education aid, school breakfast programs, bilingual-bicultural aid, world languages for elementary schools, and expanded 4-year-old kindergarten. These proven programs, all included in my budget proposal, support our New Wisconsin Promise to raise achievement for all students and close the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged students, students of color, and their peers. “Children and parents in Milwaukee will benefit from increased school health services, before and after-school programs, and driver’s education, all of which were part of my budget request. Governor Doyle’s budget builds on my proposals for transportation aid, declining enrollment, and revenue limit flexibility, providing a measure of relief to financially struggling school districts, in particular many of our rural areas.” “The single best investment we can make as a state is in our children and their education. As we move forward working with Governor Doyle and the Wisconsin State Legislature on the 2007-09 biennial budget, our shared responsibility centers on ensuring that every child, no matter where they live in our state, receives a quality education.”
