5. Jay Farnsworth receives Presidential Teaching Award

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster commended Jay Farnsworth, science teacher at Waunakee Intermediate School, for receiving the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching earlier this spring.

Farnsworth has been teaching reading, language arts, social studies, and science in Waunakee since 1987. He serves as coordinator and lead teacher for the school's laptop program and was instrumental in revisions to the sixth-grade science curriculum to reflect standards and hands on activities. In addition, Farnsworth coordinates an annual summer science program that serves 100 nominated students each year, exposing them to field experiences, involving them in hands-on activities, and taking them on a camping excursion.

"Jay represents what quality teaching in elementary science really means," Burmaster said. "He structures his classroom so students have opportunities to work cooperatively and learn through inquiry."

As a nominee for the Presidential Teaching Awards program, Farnsworth submitted a videotaped lesson, written responses to questions about his instructional practice, sample student work, and a resume of his background and experience. A national committee reporting to the White House and the National Science Foundation judged state-level finalists on their contributions to teaching and learning and their ability to help students make progress in mathematics and science.

In addition to visiting the nation's capitol, where he attended a week-long series of recognition events and professional development opportunities, Farnsworth received $10,000 from the National Science Foundation, a citation signed by the president, and gifts from program sponsors from around the country. Since 1983, more than 3,700 outstanding teachers have been recognized for their contributions to mathematics and science education through the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
