4. Partnership grants to improve mathematics and science achievementThe Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction will award $2.3 million in federal funding to programs that improve math and science achievement in Wisconsin schools. State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster says the Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant Program is showing results: "We've been awarding these grants for four years now, and many of the participating school districts have shown significant increases in the percentage of students who are proficient or advanced on statewide testing." Research has shown that the more a teacher knows about a subject, the better students perform. So the grants fund intensive training for K-12 teachers in partnership with higher education faculty in math, science, and technology. The Department of Public Instruction awarded four new partnership grants totaling $1.6 million and four renewal grants totaling $629,000 for the 2007-08 school year. The grants will impact more than 450 teachers statewide. Grants were directed to partnerships that include high-need school districts based on mathematics and science achievement on statewide tests, poverty, and population density. School districts that have a school or schools identified for improvement under federal requirements and districts with small student populations that partner together to serve a minimum of 1,800 to 2,500 students received priority. Partnerships for grants could include other public schools, public charter schools, businesses, and nonprofit or for-profit organizations that focus on mathematics or science education.
