3. Burmaster presents Friend of Education awards
On September 20, during her State of Education address at the state Capitol, Burmaster presented Friend of Education awards to:
- Julia Burney Witherspoon of Kenosha, retired Racine police officer and founder and executive director of the Cops 'N Kids Reading Program
- CUNA Mutual Group Foundation of Madison, represented by Executive Director Steve Goldberg, for various programs that serve students, educators, and communities
- Verna Fowler of Keshena, Menominee Indian leader and longtime advocate for the educational advancement of American Indians
- Karen Harden, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Band in Hayward
- Sen. Herb Kohl of Milwaukee, who established the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation in 1990, which annually provides scholarships to nearly 200 Wisconsin students and awards to 100 teachers and their schools
- The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation, established by Doug, Kim, and Renee LaViolette of Oneida
- Houa Lee of Weston, who has been the minority student adviser at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau for about 20 years
- Susan Lipp of Middleton, president of Full Compass, who is a champion for music education in our state and nation
- Dester Martin, founding executive director of the African American Chamber of Commerce in Milwaukee, which uses educational goals as a key component of its blueprint for economic development
- Dr. John Mielke, who has served on the Appleton Area Board of Education since 1992 and founded and serves on the board of the Appleton Education Foundation, and
- Rev. Carmen Porco of Madison, executive director of Housing Ministries of American Baptists in Wisconsin, which develops low-income housing communities centered around technologically equipped learning centers.
Also during her address, Burmaster presented the 2007-08 Teacher of the Year awards to Mary Tierney-Ley, Beth Oswald, Thomas Karban, and Kathryn Kostelnik (Each educator was profiled in the Sept. 10 issue of SEAchange). Before inviting the teachers to accept their awards, Burmaster announced that the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation has extended its support of the Teacher of the Year program by providing a three-thousand-dollar award to each honored educator.
