2. Learn and Serve America grants awarded

Nine grants totaling $153,116 will help school districts throughout the state nurture high quality service-learning policies and programs for their students.

"Through service-learning, our students put skills and knowledge they gain in the classroom into projects that improve their schools and communities," said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster in announcing the Learn and Serve America awards.

Service-learning is a method of teaching and learning that combines academic work with service to the community. Students learn by doing through a clear application of skills and knowledge while helping meet needs in the school or greater community.

Awards for Learn and Serve America grants for 2007-08 will be used to plan and implement service-learning as an effective instructional methodology in PK-12 classrooms throughout participating districts. Specific activities will include developing a service-learning advisory board for the district; providing professional development to increase educator skills in high quality service-learning practice; developing resources and helping to spread service-learning to other districts; and contributing to the state evaluation of the Learn and Serve program to be conducted by RMC Research Corporation.
