2. Higher Education DayState Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster joined Gov. Jim Doyle, Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton, State Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass, and Secretary of State Doug LaFollette in signing a joint proclamation designating Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007 as Wisconsin Higher Education Day. "Higher education is an investment that supports Wisconsin students, families, and communities and strengthens our state's economy," Burmaster said. "Higher Education Day is a unique opportunity for state leaders to share information about state and federal resources that are available to make higher education more affordable and accessible for any student who wants to pursue it." The Department of Public Instruction's Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Programs (WEOP) hosted informational sessions and booths around the state on Higher Education Day and throughout October. WEOP provides a variety of services to middle- and high-school students and their families to encourage and prepare students to pursue higher education.
