4. Oswald named to National Teacher of the Year program

Beth Oswald will represent Wisconsin in the National Teacher of the Year program.

Oswald of Milton teaches seventh- and eighth-grade world history at J.C. McKenna Middle School in the Evansville Community School District.

She was named the Middle/Junior High School Teacher of the Year last month. Through the generosity of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, Oswald and Wisconsin's other three Teachers of the Year received an extra honor this year. Each received $3,000 from the foundation. Oswald, as Wisconsin’s representative to the National Teacher of the Year program, will receive an additional $6,000.

By turning her annual Egypt project into a student-created Museum of Ancient Civilizations, Oswald helps her students learn research and summarizing techniques. Students make labels, organize exhibits, serve as curators, and facilitate tours for other students, parents, teachers, and community members. Fellow teacher RuthAnn Yoerger noted that, “It is awesome to see the pride on students’ faces,” as a result of the work they’ve done on the museum and the public appreciation for the effort.

Oswald has received other awards as a student council adviser: the Regional Adviser of the Year designation (2002) and the Leadership Award (2004) of the Wisconsin Association of School Councils.
