5. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Applications are sought from students in grades 5 through 12 for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which recognizes young people for outstanding community service.

Young volunteers can apply online at www.principals.org/prudential. Those without Internet access can get a paper version of the form by calling 877-525-8491 toll-free.

Applications must be completed by October 31, then printed, signed, and submitted to a middle or high school principal, Girl Scout council, county 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA, or a volunteer center belonging to the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network.

Participating schools and local organizations will select local honorees, who will receive Certificates of Achievement and, if they have contributed the requisite volunteer hours, the President's Volunteer Service Award. In February, a state-level committee will name two Wisconsin Honorees, who will each receive $1,000, a silver medallion, and a trip in May to Washington, D.C., where 10 National Honorees will be named. National Honorees receive $5,000, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and $5,000 grants for nonprofit organizations of their choice.

The program is sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
